Overview
The Least Rasbora is one of the smallest freshwater fish available in the aquarium hobby, yet its tiny size is matched by an outsized charm. Growing to less than an inch in length, this peaceful nano fish displays subtle copper, gold, and reddish hues accented by a distinctive dark lateral marking near the tail. When maintained in large groups and provided with a heavily planted aquarium, Least Rasboras create a mesmerizing display of constant movement throughout the aquarium.
Despite their diminutive size, Least Rasboras are active, hardy, and surprisingly adaptable when provided with stable water conditions. Their tiny mouths and peaceful nature make them ideal residents for nano aquariums, planted aquascapes, shrimp tanks, and community aquariums featuring other small species.
For aquarists seeking a true nano fish that thrives in naturalistic planted environments, the Least Rasbora is one of our favorite choices.

Natural Habitat
Least Rasboras (Boraras urophthalmoides) originate from slow-moving streams, marshes, flooded grasslands, and shallow wetlands throughout portions of Thailand, Cambodia, and neighboring regions of Southeast Asia. These habitats are often heavily vegetated and contain leaf litter, submerged roots, aquatic grasses, and dense plant growth.
The water in these environments is typically calm and rich in microorganisms, small crustaceans, and insect larvae that form the basis of their natural diet. Replicating these conditions with plants, floating vegetation, and botanical materials often results in the best coloration and behavior.
Aquascaping
Least Rasboras truly excel in planted aquariums that emphasize natural cover and gentle water movement. Their small size allows them to utilize intricate spaces within the aquascape that larger fish rarely explore.
We particularly enjoy keeping them alongside dense growths of Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri), Christmas Moss (Vesicularia montagnei), Guppy Grass (Najas guadalupensis), and Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides). These plants provide shelter, support natural foraging behavior, and create a sense of security that encourages more active swimming.
Floating plants such as Amazon Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum), Red Root Floater (Phyllanthus fluitans), and Salvinia (Salvinia spp.) help diffuse lighting and create a more natural environment.
Natural hardscape elements such as Spiderwood, driftwood, and small river stones complement their habitat without overwhelming the aquarium. We also enjoy incorporating Aquatic Arts Indian Almond Leaves, Guava Leaves, and Alder Cones, which contribute to a more natural ecosystem while supporting biofilm development and microfauna.
For aquarists interested in nature-style aquariums, blackwater aquariums, or shrimp-focused planted tanks, Least Rasboras are among the best nano fish available.
Diet and Feeding
Least Rasboras are tiny micro predators that naturally feed on zooplankton, microscopic crustaceans, insect larvae, and other small aquatic organisms.
Because of their small mouths, food size is often more important than food type. High-quality crushed flakes, nano pellets, and powdered foods form an excellent foundation, while Live Moina (Moina macrocopa), Baby Brine Shrimp (Artemia nauplii*), Vinegar Eels, and other small live foods help promote natural feeding behavior and optimal condition.
In mature planted aquariums, Least Rasboras also browse on tiny organisms that develop among plants, mosses, botanicals, and biofilm-rich surfaces.
Their active feeding behavior and willingness to hunt tiny prey make them fascinating fish to observe despite their small size.
Tank Mates and Compatibility
The peaceful nature of Least Rasboras makes them ideal residents for carefully selected nano community aquariums.
We particularly enjoy pairing them with other small, non-aggressive species such as Chili Rasboras (Boraras brigittae), Phoenix Rasboras (Boraras merah), Kubotai Rasboras (Microdevario kubotai), Celestial Pearl Danios (Danio margaritatus), and Emerald Dwarf Rasboras (Microrasbora erythromicron).
Bottom-dwelling companions such as Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus), Habrosus Corydoras (Corydoras habrosus), and Otocinclus (Otocinclus spp.) integrate beautifully into planted nano communities.
Adult Neocaridina Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi), Amano Shrimp (Caridina multidentata), Nerite Snails (Neritina spp.), and Mystery Snails (Pomacea diffusa) are also excellent companions.
Because of their extremely small size, Least Rasboras should not be housed with larger community fish that may outcompete them for food or view them as prey.
Ecosystem Match
Least Rasboras excel in heavily planted nano aquariums featuring dwarf shrimp, peaceful schooling fish, floating plants, mosses, botanicals, and gentle water movement.
Shrimp Safe
Least Rasboras are among the most shrimp-compatible fish available in the aquarium hobby.
Adult Neocaridina Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi), Caridina Shrimp (Caridina spp.), Amano Shrimp (Caridina multidentata), Bamboo Shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis), and Vampire Shrimp (Atya gabonensis) generally coexist exceptionally well with this species.
Due to their tiny mouths and peaceful nature, even many juvenile shrimp survive successfully in aquariums containing Least Rasboras. While newly hatched shrimplets may occasionally be consumed, survival rates are often significantly higher than with many other fish species.
Dense mosses, floating plants, and botanical cover further improve shrimp survival and create a thriving ecosystem.
Shrimp Compatibility Rating
Adult Shrimp: Excellent Compatibility
Juvenile Shrimp: Excellent Compatibility
Newly Hatched Shrimplets: Good Compatibility
Breeding
Least Rasboras are egg-scattering fish that may reproduce naturally in mature planted aquariums, although raising significant numbers of fry often requires a dedicated breeding setup.
Spawning typically occurs among fine-leaved plants and mosses where eggs can fall beyond the reach of hungry adults. Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri) and other dense plant growth frequently serve as spawning sites.
Live foods such as Baby Brine Shrimp (Artemia nauplii*) and Live Moina (Moina macrocopa) are excellent conditioning foods that help encourage spawning behavior.
One of the most rewarding aspects of keeping Least Rasboras is observing their natural courtship displays among dense vegetation.

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time.
