This tiny fish is extremely peaceful and is ideal for the nano aquarium. It is even safe to keep with dwarf shrimp!
The Chili Rasbora (Boraras brigittae), also known as the Mosquito Rasbora, is one of the most sought-after nano schooling fish in the freshwater aquarium hobby. Known for its intense red coloration and contrasting dark lateral stripe, Boraras brigittae delivers exceptional visual impact in planted aquariums without overwhelming smaller layouts.
This species remains extremely small at adulthood, making it ideal for nano aquariums and carefully scaled aquascapes. When maintained in stable water conditions with subdued lighting and structured planting, Chili Rasboras develop deeper red tones and display tight schooling behavior.
Boraras brigittae thrives in established freshwater systems with gentle flow, plant density, and stable parameters. Their peaceful temperament makes them a strong candidate for planted community and shrimp-compatible aquariums.
What We Like About This Fish:
• Intense Nano Coloration: Deep red body with bold horizontal striping.
• True Nano Proportion: Ideal for 10–20 gallon planted aquariums.
• Tight Schooling Behavior: Displays cohesive group movement in proper numbers.
• Excellent for Shrimp Ecosystems: Integrates well into peaceful planted systems.

The original Chili Rasbora (Boraras brigittae) was first documented in Borneo, where it inhabits slow-moving forest streams and peat swamp systems. These environments are typically soft, slightly acidic, and rich in submerged vegetation and leaf litter.
Natural habitats often contain tannins from decomposing plant matter, gentle current, and shaded overhead canopy. Boraras brigittae occupies calm midwater zones, weaving through fine vegetation while maintaining tight schooling groups.
Understanding this habitat supports aquarium design decisions, particularly regarding soft water conditions, structured planting, and subdued lighting.
Chili Rasbora thrives in aquariums that prioritize plant density, soft structure, and nano-scale proportion.
• Plants: Dense stem plants, carpeting plants, and mosses create security and enhance coloration. Floating plants help diffuse lighting and replicate shaded forest conditions.
• Hardscape: Fine driftwood branches and smaller stones maintain proportional scale in nano aquariums.
• Botanicals: Leaf litter and botanicals such as Indian Almond Leaves may be incorporated to simulate peat swamp environments and introduce mild tannins.
• Open Swim Lanes: Maintain open midwater space to allow coordinated schooling.
• Flow: Gentle flow is recommended. Avoid strong directional current.
Well-balanced aquascapes enhance red coloration, reduce stress, and encourage natural group movement.
Boraras brigittae is a micropredatory species that consumes tiny aquatic invertebrates and zooplankton in the wild.
In the aquarium, they readily accept micro pellets, finely crushed flake foods, frozen cyclops, baby brine shrimp, and other appropriately sized nano foods. Due to their extremely small mouth size, food particle size is critical.
Frequent small feedings support coloration, vitality, and breeding potential.
Chili Rasboras are peaceful and best suited for nano community aquariums with similarly small, non-aggressive species.
They pair well with other Boraras species, micro tetras, small Corydoras, and peaceful shrimp colonies. Avoid larger fish or highly competitive species that may intimidate them or outcompete them for food.
Maintaining proper group size improves confidence and visible schooling behavior.
Chili Rasboras are generally safe with adult Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp. However, due to their micropredatory nature, very small shrimplets may occasionally be consumed.
Dense planting and moss coverage improve coexistence in shrimp-focused aquariums..
Boraras brigittae is an egg-scattering species. In mature, well-planted aquariums, spawning may occur under stable conditions.
Eggs are typically deposited among fine-leaved plants or moss. Adults do not provide parental care and may consume eggs or fry if not separated.
• How big does Chili Rasbora (Boraras brigittae) get?
Chili Rasbora (Boraras brigittae) typically grows to about 0.6–0.8 inch in length, making it one of the smallest nano schooling fish available.
• Is Chili Rasbora good for a 10-gallon tank?
Yes. Boraras brigittae thrives in planted 10-gallon or larger nano aquariums when kept in a proper group.
• How many Chili Rasboras should be kept together?
A group of at least 8 Chili Rasboras is recommended to promote natural schooling behavior and reduce stress.
• Are Chili Rasboras peaceful community fish?
Yes. Boraras brigittae is a peaceful nano species suitable for calm community aquariums with similarly sized fish.
• Can Chili Rasboras live with shrimp?
Chili Rasboras are generally safe with adult Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp, though very small shrimplets may occasionally be consumed.
• What do Chili Rasboras eat?
Boraras brigittae accepts micro pellets, crushed flake, frozen cyclops, baby brine shrimp, and other appropriately sized nano foods.
• Do Chili Rasboras need soft water?
Yes. Chili Rasboras perform best in soft, slightly acidic water with stable parameters.
• Are Chili Rasboras hardy?
Boraras brigittae is moderately hardy when kept in a stable, established aquarium with consistent water conditions.
• Do Chili Rasboras breed in captivity?
Yes. Chili Rasboras are egg scatterers and may spawn in mature planted aquariums under stable conditions.
• How long does Boraras brigittae live?
With proper care and stable water parameters, Chili Rasboras can live several years in freshwater aquariums..

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
