Overview
The Triple Red Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid is one of the most colorful and popular dwarf cichlids available in the aquarium hobby. Selectively bred from the naturally occurring Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma cacatuoides), this tank-bred variety is prized for its vibrant red finnage, bold personality, and fascinating behavior. Males develop extended dorsal fin rays that resemble the crest of a cockatoo, while the brilliant red coloration throughout the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins creates a truly eye-catching display.
Unlike many larger cichlids, Triple Red Cockatoos remain relatively small and can be successfully maintained in planted community aquariums with carefully selected tank mates. Their intelligence, breeding behavior, and interaction with their environment make them one of the most rewarding fish for aquarists who enjoy observing natural behaviors.

Natural Habitat
The original Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma cacatuoides) is native to tributaries and slow-moving waterways within the upper Amazon Basin of Peru and Brazil. These habitats are often characterized by leaf litter, submerged roots, fallen branches, and dense aquatic vegetation.
The Triple Red variety was developed through selective breeding to enhance the vibrant red coloration found in the fins while maintaining the hardiness and engaging behavior of the original species. Although this variety was developed in captivity, it still appreciates aquarium environments that incorporate natural cover, caves, wood, and botanical materials.
Aquascaping
One of the most enjoyable aspects of keeping Triple Red Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlids is creating an aquarium that encourages their natural behaviors. These fish spend much of their time exploring caves, investigating leaf litter, and establishing territories among wood and rock formations.
We especially enjoy combining Malaysian Driftwood, Spiderwood, and natural stone to create multiple hiding places and visual barriers. The addition of coconut caves, rock caves, and root structures helps mimic the sheltered environments these fish naturally seek.
Plants such as Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus), Anubias (Anubias spp.), Cryptocoryne (Cryptocoryne spp.), and Amazon Sword (Echinodorus spp.) provide cover while maintaining open areas for swimming and displaying. Floating plants such as Amazon Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum) can help diffuse lighting and create a more relaxed environment.
We also strongly recommend Aquatic Arts Indian Almond Leaves, Guava Leaves, Alder Cones, and other botanicals. These materials create a more natural aesthetic while encouraging beneficial microbial activity and helping replicate the leaf-litter habitats favored by many dwarf cichlids.
Diet and Feeding
Triple Red Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlids are opportunistic carnivorous omnivores that naturally feed on insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and other tiny aquatic organisms.
In the aquarium, they thrive on a varied diet consisting of quality prepared foods and regular protein-rich supplements. High-quality micro pellets and cichlid foods provide an excellent foundation, while Live Moina (Moina macrocopa), Live Daphnia (Daphnia spp.), Baby Brine Shrimp (Artemia nauplii*), and frozen foods help maintain coloration, condition, and breeding readiness.
These fish are active hunters and often spend time searching among plants, wood, and leaf litter for small food items. Their feeding behavior is one of the many reasons they are so entertaining to observe.
ank Mates and Compatibility
Triple Red Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlids are generally peaceful by cichlid standards, but they do establish territories, particularly during breeding periods. Tank mates should be selected with this behavior in mind.
Peaceful schooling fish such as Cardinal Tetras (Paracheirodon axelrodi), Rummy Nose Tetras (Hemigrammus rhodostomus), Ember Tetras (Hyphessobrycon amandae), and Hatchetfish (Carnegiella spp.) make excellent companions because they occupy different areas of the aquarium and help create a sense of security.
Bottom-dwelling species such as Corydoras Catfish (Corydoras spp.) can also coexist successfully in larger aquariums, provided ample territory and hiding places are available.
Larger algae-eating species such as Bristlenose Plecos (Ancistrus spp.) and Otocinclus (Otocinclus spp.) often integrate well into Apistogramma aquariums without creating territorial conflicts.
Aggressive cichlids, fin nippers, and highly territorial fish should generally be avoided.
Ecosystem Match
Triple Red Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlids excel in planted South American community aquariums featuring peaceful schooling fish, driftwood, leaf litter, caves, and botanical enrichment.
Shrimp Safe
Triple Red Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlids are not considered shrimp safe.
Because they are natural micropredators, they readily consume shrimp fry and may prey upon smaller dwarf shrimp species. While some aquarists successfully keep adult Amano Shrimp (Caridina multidentata) alongside Apistogramma species, success often depends on aquarium size, available cover, and individual fish temperament.
Dense plant growth, mosses, driftwood, and botanical zones can improve shrimp survival, but hobbyists should expect some predation.
Shrimp Compatibility Rating
Adult Amano Shrimp: Moderate Compatibility
Adult Neocaridina Shrimp: Low Compatibility
Juvenile Shrimp: Poor Compatibility
Shrimplets: Very High Predation Risk
Breeding
Triple Red Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlids are cave-spawning dwarf cichlids and are considered one of the easier Apistogramma species to breed.
Females typically select a cave, coconut shell, or sheltered crevice where they deposit eggs. Once spawning occurs, the female becomes highly protective of the eggs and fry, while the male patrols the surrounding territory.
Aquariums containing caves, driftwood, leaf litter, and botanical materials help encourage natural breeding behavior. Live foods such as Baby Brine Shrimp (Artemia nauplii*) and Live Moina (Moina macrocopa) are often excellent conditioning foods prior to spawning.
One of the most rewarding aspects of keeping this species is observing their exceptional parental care. Females carefully guard and lead their fry through the aquarium while protecting them from potential threats.
