The Zig Zag Tetra (Piabina argentea) is an active and sleek midwater swimmer known for its bold black lateral stripe that sharply zigzags through a shimmering silver body. Native to the fast-moving rivers and streams of South America, this lesser-known species is perfect for aquarists looking to add something truly unique to their freshwater community. These tank-bred specimens are hardy, peaceful, and ideal for planted setups with gentle flow.

What We Love About This Fish:

Distinctive Pattern: Bold zigzag stripe adds visual interest to the aquarium
Hardy and Peaceful: Ideal for peaceful community tanks and planted aquascapes
Constant Motion: Active schooling fish that brings energy to the midwater column
Underrated Gem: A unique alternative to more common tetras

Natural Habitat:

Native to the clearwater and whitewater streams of Brazil and neighboring regions, the Zig Zag Tetra is found in environments with moderate current, sandy or rocky bottoms, and abundant leaf litter or submerged vegetation.

Aquascaping:

Plants: Fine-leaved species like Water Sprite, Ludwigia, and Rotala work well
Hardscape: River stones, driftwood, and smooth gravel substrate mimic natural surroundings
Botanicals: Indian Almond Leaves and seed pods provide tannins and cover

Diet and Feeding:

Zig Zag Tetras are micro-predators in the wild and do well on a diet of high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Offer variety for best coloration and energy.

Tank Mates and Compatibility:

These tetras are peaceful and do best in groups of 6 or more. Great companions include other peaceful tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, Corydoras, and smaller loaches. Avoid large or aggressive tank mates.

Shrimp Safe?:

Generally safe with adult shrimp, but like most tetras, they may snack on baby shrimp. Provide plenty of hiding spots and dense plant cover if keeping with shrimp.

Breeding:

Zig Zag Tetras are egg scatterers and can be bred in captivity with a separate spawning tank, dim lighting, and fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Remove adults after spawning to protect eggs.

Recommended Tank Parameters:

Temperature: 72° - 80° F (22° - 27° C)
pH: 6.0 - 7.5
KH: 2 - 10
Minimum Tank Size: 15 gallons (for a group of 6 or more)

Care Guidelines:

Diet: Omnivorous. Provide flakes, micro pellets, and live/frozen protein-rich foods.

Origin: Tank-bred
Average Adult Size: 2.5 inches (6.4 cm)
Average Purchase Size: 1.25 - 1.75 inches (3.2 - 4.4 cm)

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
