Product Overview

The Western Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia australis) is one of Australia's most colorful freshwater fish, prized for its active schooling behavior, metallic sheen, and brilliant red, orange, and yellow coloration. Mature males are especially impressive, often developing intense coloration that becomes even more vibrant during displays and breeding activity.

This species is constantly on the move and adds tremendous energy to larger community aquariums. Their peaceful temperament and hardy nature make them excellent candidates for rainbowfish communities as well as larger planted aquariums featuring other active schooling fish.

Our Tank-Bred Western Rainbowfish are carefully raised in captivity and adapt readily to aquarium life. When maintained in schools and provided with quality nutrition, these beautiful fish reward hobbyists with exceptional color, activity, and natural social behaviors.

Natural Habitat

Western Rainbowfish are native to rivers, streams, billabongs, and freshwater pools throughout northwestern Australia. Many of these habitats experience seasonal fluctuations in water levels and temperatures, contributing to the species' adaptability and resilience.

In the wild, they are typically found in areas with submerged vegetation, woody debris, and open swimming space. These environments provide shelter, feeding opportunities, and areas for breeding displays.

Their natural habitat often consists of clear to slightly stained water with abundant sunlight, which helps support algae growth, aquatic plants, and the small invertebrates that form part of their natural diet.

Aquascaping

Western Rainbowfish thrive in aquariums that combine open swimming areas with planted sections and natural hardscape. Because they are active schooling fish, maintaining ample open water is just as important as providing cover.

Driftwood, river stones, and planted borders help recreate their natural environment while giving fish security and visual structure. Taller background plants work especially well since these fish spend much of their time in the middle and upper portions of the aquarium.

Excellent plant choices include Vallisneria, Amazon Sword Plants, Water Wisteria, Bacopa, and various stem plants. Floating plants can also help diffuse lighting while creating a more natural appearance.

A larger planted community aquarium with open swimming lanes is often considered the ideal setup for this species.

Diet and Feeding

Western Rainbowfish are omnivores that readily accept a wide variety of foods. In nature, they consume small insects, insect larvae, crustaceans, algae, biofilm, and plant material.

High-quality flake foods make an excellent staple diet and are readily accepted by aquarium-raised specimens. Quality pellets, frozen foods, and live foods can be offered regularly to provide additional variety and nutrition.

Foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, blackworms, and insect-based foods help support coloration, growth, and breeding condition. Mature males often display their best colors when maintained on a varied diet.

Providing multiple food types throughout the week helps mimic natural feeding opportunities while promoting long-term health and vitality.

Tank Mates and Compatibility

Western Rainbowfish are peaceful schooling fish that work exceptionally well in larger community aquariums. Their active nature makes them best suited for similarly energetic species.

Excellent tank mates include:

• Boesemani Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani) – Colorful Schooling Fish

• Turquoise Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia lacustris) – Active Midwater Species

• Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox) – Smaller Rainbowfish Companion

• Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) – Colorful Schooling Fish

• Denison Barb (Sahyadria denisonii) – Active Community Fish

• Pearl Gourami (Trichopodus leerii) – Peaceful Feature Fish

• Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus spp.) – Algae Grazing Bottom Dweller

• Corydoras Catfish (Corydoras spp.) – Social Bottom Dweller

Because they are schooling fish, Western Rainbowfish should always be maintained in groups. Keeping too few individuals may result in shy behavior and reduced coloration.

Shrimp Safe

Adult shrimp may coexist with Western Rainbowfish in larger aquariums, but shrimplets and very small shrimp are at risk of predation.

Shrimp Compatibility Rating

Adult Shrimp: Moderate Compatibility

Juvenile Shrimp: Low Compatibility

Shrimplets: High Predation Risk

Breeding

Western Rainbowfish are egg scatterers that deposit adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, spawning mops, and similar structures. Mature males intensify in coloration during breeding displays and actively court females.

While breeding is relatively straightforward, raising large numbers of fry typically requires a dedicated breeding setup to prevent predation on eggs and newly hatched fry.

A varied diet, clean water, and stable conditions often encourage spawning activity in mature groups.
