Each trio consists of one male and two females, the perfect ratio for a healthy and balanced breeding group. These tank-bred platies are known for their brilliant red bodies, and their peaceful nature makes them an ideal choice for community tanks. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced aquarist, the Red Crystal Platy Trio will bring beauty, activity, and a fun breeding experience to your aquarium. Individual genders are sometimes available.

What We Love About This Trio:

• A brilliant red appearance: The Red Crystal Platy’s vivid red coloration shines through in any setup, adding a beautiful contrast to your tank.
An ideal breeding group: The 1 male to 2 female ratio promotes a balanced, stress-free environment, encouraging frequent breeding.
Great for beginners and breeding enthusiasts: Hardy and easy to care for, this trio offers an ideal setup for those starting a breeding group or adding vibrant color to their aquarium.
Livebearers that reproduce easily: With proper care, the Red Crystal Platy Trio will establish a self-sustaining population, allowing you to enjoy watching their fry grow into stunning adults.

What Does Trio Mean?

A "Trio" refers to a group of three Red Crystal Platies: one male and two females. This 1:2 male-to-female ratio is essential for successful breeding, helping reduce stress on the females and encouraging a natural breeding cycle. This setup ensures your fish will thrive and reproduce regularly in a balanced social environment.

Natural Habitat:

Though selectively bred for their vibrant red color, Red Crystal Platies are native to Central America. In the wild, they thrive in slow-moving streams, ponds, and rivers with plenty of vegetation and moderate water flow.

Aquascaping:

• Plants: Hardy plants such as Java Fern, Anubias, or Hornwort create cover for fry and provide a natural environment for your platies to explore.
Hardscape: Incorporate river rocks, driftwood, and other natural elements to create hiding spots and structure for your trio.
Botanicals: Indian almond leaves can be added to improve water quality and create a more natural habitat, though they are not essential.

Diet and Feeding:

Red Crystal Platies are omnivores and do best with a varied diet. Feed them high-quality flakes or pellets as a staple, and supplement their diet with blanched vegetables (such as spinach or zucchini) and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia to promote their health and vibrant coloration.

Tank Mates and Compatibility:

Red Crystal Platies are peaceful fish that get along well with other small, non-aggressive species like Corydoras, Guppies, and small Tetras. Avoid housing them with larger or aggressive species that may stress or harm them.

Shrimp Safe:

Red Crystal Platies are generally safe with adult shrimp but may prey on shrimp fry. To protect shrimp fry, ensure the tank has plenty of hiding spots and cover.

Breeding:

Red Crystal Platies are livebearers, meaning the females give birth to free-swimming fry. To ensure breeding success, provide plenty of plant cover for the fry to hide, as adult fish may eat them. In a well-planted tank, fry survival rates will increase.

Recommended Tank Parameters:

• Temperature: 68° - 79°F (20° - 26°C)
pH: 7.0 - 8.2
KH: 10 - 25 dKH
Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons (for a trio)

Care Guidelines:

• Diet: Feed a varied diet of high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with blanched vegetables and live or frozen treats.
Social Behavior: Red Crystal Platies are social fish that thrive in groups. The 1 male to 2 female ratio ensures balanced interactions and breeding success.
Origin: These Red Crystal Platies are tank-bred for hardiness and their brilliant red coloration, making them well-adapted to aquarium life.
Average Adult Size: 2 - 2.5 inches (5 - 6.5 cm)
Average Purchase Size: 1 - 1.5 inches (2.5 - 4 cm)

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
