IMPORTANT: Vampire Crab Habitat Requirements
Vampire Crabs are semi-terrestrial animals and are NOT fully aquatic. Unlike freshwater crabs, Vampire Crabs spend the majority of their lives on land and require a habitat that is at least 50% land, although we strongly recommend 70% or more land area. A paludarium with both land and freshwater sections is the ideal setup for long-term success.
Vampire Crabs should not be housed in traditional aquariums designed for fish, shrimp, or fully aquatic crabs. They require access to land, high humidity, hiding places, and a shallow freshwater area.
We also strongly recommend keeping only a single Vampire Crab species per enclosure. Many Vampire Crabs offered in the aquarium hobby may appear similar but are often different species within the Geosesarma genus. Mixing species can result in territorial disputes, stress, and complications with species identification and breeding.
For the best results, maintain Purple Haze Vampire Crabs in a species-only paludarium designed specifically for their needs.
For the safety of our animals, Purple Haze Vampire Crabs ship exclusively via UPS Next Day Service. If your order contains this item, UPS Next Day Service will be the only shipping option available during checkout.
Overview
The Purple Haze Vampire Crab is one of the most unique members of the Geosesarma genus and is also known in the hobby as the Buricak Vampire Crab or Graphite Grey Vampire Crab. Unlike brightly colored species that immediately stand out, Purple Haze Vampire Crabs captivate hobbyists with their smoky graphite coloration, subtle purple highlights, and mysterious appearance.
Depending on age, sex, molt cycle, lighting, and genetics, individuals may display shades ranging from dark graphite grey to deep violet-purple. Their understated beauty has made them increasingly popular among hobbyists who appreciate naturalistic paludariums and bioactive terrariums.
Like all Vampire Crabs, this species is semi-terrestrial and spends most of its life on land. Watching them explore leaf litter, climb driftwood, forage among mosses, and interact with their environment is one of the reasons they have become such a sought-after paludarium inhabitant.

Natural Habitat
Purple Haze Vampire Crabs originate from humid tropical forest environments in Indonesia. Like many Geosesarma species, they inhabit areas near freshwater seeps, streams, and forest floor habitats rich in mosses, roots, stones, and leaf litter.
These habitats provide abundant hiding places, stable humidity, and a constant supply of insects, microorganisms, and organic material. Replicating these conditions is often the key to long-term success.
Paludarium Design and Aquascaping
Purple Haze Vampire Crabs thrive in heavily planted paludariums that emphasize land area, humidity, and environmental complexity.
We especially enjoy creating bioactive habitats using tropical mosses, cork bark, Malaysian Driftwood, spiderwood, and deep leaf litter. These materials provide hiding places, molting sites, climbing opportunities, and natural foraging areas.
Plants such as Pothos (Epipremnum aureum), Creeping Fig (Ficus pumila), Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri), Bucephalandra species, and tropical ferns thrive alongside Vampire Crabs while helping maintain humidity.
Aquatic Arts Indian Almond Leaves, Guava Leaves, Magnolia Leaves, and Alder Cones help recreate a natural forest-floor environment while encouraging beneficial microbial activity.
For long-term success, we strongly recommend incorporating springtails and isopods as part of a bioactive cleanup crew.
Diet and Feeding
Purple Haze Vampire Crabs are opportunistic omnivores that spend much of their day searching for food among leaf litter, mosses, and hardscape.
A varied diet consisting of quality invertebrate foods, shrimp foods, sinking pellets, insect-based diets, bloodworms, black soldier fly larvae, and occasional fruits or vegetables helps support healthy molts and long-term health.
In mature bioactive setups, they also consume naturally occurring microorganisms and organic material found throughout the enclosure.
Tank Mates and Compatibility
Purple Haze Vampire Crabs are best maintained in species-focused paludariums or alongside carefully selected bioactive cleanup crew organisms.
Springtails and isopods are among our favorite companions because they occupy different ecological niches and help maintain enclosure cleanliness.
While some hobbyists maintain aquatic shrimp or snails within the water section of larger paludariums, compatibility varies and occasional predation should be expected.
Ecosystem Match
Purple Haze Vampire Crabs excel in tropical bioactive paludariums featuring mosses, tropical plants, leaf litter, driftwood, springtails, isopods, and botanical enrichment.
Shrimp Safe
Purple Haze Vampire Crabs are not considered shrimp safe.
While some adult shrimp may survive in larger, heavily structured paludariums, vampire crabs are opportunistic predators that may prey upon shrimp if given the opportunity.
Shrimp Compatibility Rating
Adult Shrimp: Moderate Compatibility
Juvenile Shrimp: Low Compatibility
Shrimplets: Very High Predation Risk
Breeding
Like other members of the Geosesarma genus, Purple Haze Vampire Crabs are direct developers.
Females carry eggs beneath their abdomen until fully formed juvenile crabs emerge. Unlike many aquatic crab species, there is no free-swimming larval stage requiring brackish or marine water.
Stable humidity, abundant cover, quality nutrition, and mature bioactive conditions often contribute to successful breeding.
Is the Purple Haze Vampire Crab rare?
