Overview

The Peppermint Pleco (L030 / L031) is a striking and highly sought-after species known for its deep charcoal body accented by fine white spotting that resembles scattered grains of peppermint. Native to the fast-flowing waters of Brazil, this pleco brings both visual contrast and purposeful movement to the aquarium.

Unlike many common plecos, this species remains relatively manageable in size while still offering the bold presence and structure that plecos are known for. It spends much of its time attached to wood, rock, and glass surfaces, grazing and observing its environment.

In the right setup, this fish becomes more than just a bottom dweller. It becomes part of the structure of the aquarium itself, anchoring the layout while subtly interacting with its surroundings.

What We Love About This Fish

Distinct Peppermint Patterning: Dark body with crisp white spotting creates a bold, clean contrast
Active Surface Grazer: Frequently seen on wood, rock, and glass
Manageable Size for a Pleco: Offers presence without the footprint of larger species
Rare and Collected: A standout addition for collectors and experienced aquarists

The Peppermint Pleco originates from fast-flowing river systems in Brazil, where oxygen levels are high and water moves continuously over rock, wood, and submerged surfaces. These environments are often clear, with strong current and abundant biofilm growth on hardscape.

The fish uses its specialized mouth to cling to surfaces, allowing it to remain stable even in strong flow while grazing for food.

This species thrives in aquascapes that emphasize structure and flow.

Start with a solid foundation of driftwood and rock, creating surfaces for grazing and areas of shelter. The layout should feel anchored, with hardscape forming the backbone of the aquarium rather than simply acting as decoration.

Plants should be used selectively. Epiphytes like Anubias and Java Fern work well when attached to wood, allowing the pleco to move freely without disturbing rooted plants.

Moderate to strong flow is highly beneficial, helping replicate the oxygen-rich environments this species prefers.

Aquatic Arts botanicals can be used sparingly to introduce natural texture, though the focus should remain on clean structure and water movement rather than heavy leaf litter.

The Peppermint Pleco is an omnivore that requires a varied diet. High-quality sinking pellets and algae wafers should form the foundation, supplemented with protein-rich foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, or repashy-style gel foods.

While it will graze on biofilm, supplemental feeding is essential for long-term health.

This species does well with peaceful midwater fish such as tetras, rasboras, and other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with other plecos or bottom dwellers in smaller tanks, as territorial behavior may occur.

Not considered shrimp safe. Smaller shrimp may be viewed as food, especially during nighttime activity.

Breeding in captivity is rare and not commonly documented. Most specimens in the hobby are collected.

How large does a Peppermint Pleco get?

They typically reach 5 to 7 inches in length, making them a manageable size compared to many larger pleco species.

Are Peppermint Plecos good algae eaters?

They will graze on biofilm and some algae, but they should not be relied on as a primary algae control solution.

Do they need driftwood in the tank?

Yes. Driftwood provides essential grazing surfaces and shelter, both of which are important for their long-term health.

Can I keep more than one Peppermint Pleco?

They are best kept singly unless the aquarium is large and provides plenty of structure to break line of sight.

Are they aggressive?

They are generally peaceful but can be territorial with other bottom-dwelling fish, especially in smaller tanks.

What do Peppermint Plecos eat?

They require a varied diet including sinking pellets, algae wafers, and protein-rich foods such as frozen or live options.

Are they compatible with shrimp?

They are not considered shrimp safe, as they may prey on smaller shrimp, particularly at night.

Do they require strong water flow?

Moderate to strong flow is recommended to replicate their natural environment and support oxygenation.

Are they beginner-friendly?

They are best suited for aquarists with some experience due to their dietary needs and preference for stable conditions.

Why is my Peppermint Pleco hiding?

This species is naturally more active during low-light periods and may hide during the day, especially when first introduced.

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
