The Panda Crab is a fascinating and unique freshwater invertebrate, known for its striking black and white coloration and peaceful nature. While it is communal with its own species, it is often aggressive with other types of crabs, including vampire crab species with which it competes in the wild. It is a skilled climber, so extra care must be taken to ensure that it does not escape its enclosure.

Description:

The Panda Crab (Lepidothelphusa cognetti) is a captivating freshwater crab that features a striking black and white pattern, reminiscent of a panda. This small, tank-bred crab is an excellent addition to any freshwater aquarium, offering both beauty and utility. Panda Crabs are known for their peaceful demeanor and unique appearance, making them a favorite among aquarists. They typically inhabit the lower levels of the aquarium and appreciate a well-structured habitat with plenty of hiding spots and climbing areas.

What We Like About This Crab:

  • Striking Coloration: Unique black and white pattern.
  • Peaceful Nature: Suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive species.
  • Hardy and Adaptable: Slightly harder water to help with molting.
  • Interesting Behavior: Adds diversity and intrigue to the aquarium.

Tank Setup:

Panda Crabs require a well-structured tank setup to thrive. Use a combination of rocks, driftwood, and caves to create hiding spots and climbing areas. Ensure the tank has a secure lid, as crabs are known to be escape artists. A sandy or fine gravel substrate is ideal, allowing the crabs to burrow and forage. Provide a gentle water flow and maintain excellent water quality with regular filtration and water changes.

Land to Water Ratio:

For Panda Crabs, maintaining a balanced land-to-water ratio is crucial. Ideally, the tank should have approximately 70% water and 30% land. This setup allows the crabs to have ample space for swimming and burrowing while also providing sufficient land areas for climbing and resting. Use rocks, driftwood, and other structures to create these land areas, ensuring they are easily accessible from the water.

Aquascaping:

Panda Crabs thrive in aquascaped tanks with plenty of hiding places and structures to explore. Use rocks, driftwood, and caves to create a stimulating environment. Aquatic plants like Java Moss, Anubias, and Cryptocoryne can enhance the habitat by providing additional cover and climbing surfaces.

Botanicals:

Incorporating botanicals such as Indian Almond Leaves and Catappa Bark can enrich the aquarium environment for Panda Crabs. These botanicals release beneficial tannins and humic substances, creating a more natural habitat. They also provide additional hiding spots and grazing areas, promoting natural behavior and enhancing the overall health of your crabs.

Bio Active Tankmates:

Creating a bioactive environment can be highly beneficial for Panda Crabs. Introducing small invertebrates such as springtails and isopods can help maintain the cleanliness of the tank by consuming organic waste and decaying matter. Springtails are tiny, soil-dwelling creatures that thrive in moist environments, helping to break down mold and organic debris. Isopods, also known as "woodlice" or "rolly pollies," are excellent decomposers that contribute to the breakdown of leaf litter and other organic material. These invertebrates create a more natural and balanced ecosystem, reducing the need for frequent tank maintenance and enhancing the overall health of the habitat.

Diet:

Panda Crabs are omnivorous and will thrive on a varied diet. Offer high-quality crab pellets, algae wafers, and fresh vegetables like zucchini and spinach. They will also appreciate occasional protein treats such as bloodworms or brine shrimp. A varied diet helps maintain their vibrant color and overall health.

Compatible Tankmates:

Panda Crabs are generally peaceful and can coexist with other non-aggressive species. Suitable tankmates include small, peaceful fish, snails, and other invertebrates. Avoid housing them with large or aggressive species that may pose a threat.

Shrimp Compatible:

Panda Crabs are generally peaceful but may pose a risk to very small shrimp. They can coexist with larger shrimp species if provided with plenty of hiding spaces to minimize risk and ensure a harmonious tank environment.

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
