The original Ornate Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia splendida) was first documented across northern Australia in slow-moving rivers, billabongs, and floodplain systems. These waters are often warm, slightly tannin-stained, and filled with submerged vegetation and natural cover. This tank-bred checkered variant maintains the same adaptability but thrives in stable, well-maintained aquarium conditions.

Create a flowing, natural environment that highlights both movement and color. Use a mix of rooted plants and open swimming space to allow schooling behavior to shine.

Plants: Jungle Val, Water Wisteria, Rotala, and floating plants like Frogbit

Hardscape: Smooth river stones and branching driftwood

Botanicals: Indian Almond Leaves and seed pods to create a natural, slightly tinted environment

This species is an omnivore that thrives on a varied diet. Offer a high-quality mix of flakes, micro pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as daphnia or brine shrimp to enhance coloration and activity.

Checkered Ornate Rainbowfish are peaceful and do well with similarly sized community fish. Ideal tank mates include tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, Corydoras, and other rainbowfish species.

Avoid aggressive or highly territorial fish that may outcompete or stress them.

Use caution when housing with shrimp. While generally peaceful, larger individuals may opportunistically consume very small shrimp or fry. Established shrimp colonies with plenty of cover can coexist successfully.

This is an egg-scattering species that prefers to spawn among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Eggs are adhesive and hatch within several days. Adults do not typically guard eggs, so separation is recommended for higher survival rates.

What makes this checkered variant different from standard Ornate Rainbowfish?

This variant displays a more defined mottled or checkered pattern along the body, giving it a unique visual texture.

How many should I keep together?

A group of at least six is recommended to promote natural schooling behavior and reduce stress.

Are they aggressive?

No, they are peaceful and well-suited for community aquariums.

Do they need a planted tank?

They strongly benefit from plants, but also require open swimming space.

Will they eat shrimp?

They may eat very small shrimp or fry, but usually leave adult shrimp alone.

What do they eat in captivity?

A mix of flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods works best.

Do they jump?

They can jump, so a secure lid is recommended.

How fast do they grow?

With proper care and feeding, they grow steadily to adult size within several months.

Are they beginner-friendly?

Yes, they are hardy and adaptable when kept in stable conditions.

Can they live with other rainbowfish?

Yes, they do well in mixed rainbowfish communities when space allows.

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
