The Chubby Pleco (Pseudorinelepis genibarbis), also known by its L-number designation L056, is a distinctive armored catfish from Brazil. True to its name, this pleco has a robust, “chubby” body with rows of bony plates and a unique sucker mouth adapted for life along the bottom of fast-moving rivers. While less flashy than other plecos, its unusual form, armored appearance, and hardworking scavenger behavior make it an appealing addition for aquarists looking for something different.

What We Love About This Fish:

• Distinctive “chubby” body and heavily armored appearance
• Hardy and adaptable to a range of freshwater aquariums
• Peaceful disposition; works well in community setups
• Active bottom-dweller that helps with cleanup and adds personality

Natural Habitat:

The Chubby Pleco is native to the rivers of Brazil, particularly slow- to moderately flowing tributaries with sandy or silty bottoms. These waters often contain submerged roots, wood, and scattered rockwork that provide shelter and grazing surfaces.

Aquascaping:

Plants: Hardy rooted plants such as Amazon Swords and Vallisneria are suitable, though décor should emphasize open bottom space.
Hardscape: Provide driftwood, caves, and smooth stones for shelter.
Botanicals: Indian Almond Leaves or alder cones can add tannins and encourage natural foraging behavior.

Diet and Feeding:

Chubby Plecos are omnivorous scavengers. In the aquarium, they thrive on sinking algae wafers, vegetable matter (blanched zucchini, spinach, cucumber), and occasional protein-based foods such as shrimp pellets or bloodworms. They also sift through substrate for detritus.

Tank Mates and Compatibility:

Generally peaceful, this pleco coexists well with most community fish including tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with overly territorial plecos or large predatory fish.

Shrimp Compatibility:

Safe with adult shrimp, but may opportunistically consume small shrimp fry if food is scarce.

Breeding:

Very rare in home aquariums. Limited information is available on captive breeding, as most specimens are wild-caught.

Recommended Tank Parameters:

• Temperature: 74° – 82° F (23° – 28° C)
• pH: 6.0 – 7.5
• KH: 2 – 12
• Minimum Tank Size: 40 gallons

Care Guidelines:

Diet: Omnivorous; accepts algae wafers, vegetables, and protein foods.
Social Behavior: Peaceful bottom-dweller.
Origin: Wild-caught from Brazil.
Average Adult Size: 6 – 8 inches (15 – 20 cm)
Average Purchase Size: 2.5 – 3 inches (6.35 - 7.62 cm)

Add the unique Chubby Pleco to your aquarium for its hardy nature, armored look, and steady bottom-dwelling presence.

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
