Yes. The MAXUM Air Pump can be operated using a single airline if only one air stone or sponge filter is needed.
Does the MAXUM Air Pump include everything needed to get started?
The MAXUM Air Pump includes the primary components needed for operation. Always verify the package contents before purchase and keep replacement air stones and airline tubing on hand as part of your aquarium maintenance supplies.
How often should I test my battery backup air pump?
It is a good idea to periodically disconnect household power briefly to confirm the battery backup system activates properly. Routine testing helps ensure the unit is ready before an actual emergency occurs.
Can I use check valves with the MAXUM Air Pump?
Yes. Check valves are recommended for nearly all aquarium air pumps because they help prevent water from siphoning backward into the air pump if airflow stops.
Should every aquarium owner own a battery backup air pump?
We believe every aquarium owner should have a plan for unexpected power outages. A battery backup air pump is one of the most affordable and effective pieces of emergency equipment available for protecting aquarium livestock.
What other emergency equipment does Aquatic Arts recommend besides a battery backup air pump?
In addition to a battery backup air pump, Aquatic Arts recommends keeping spare airline tubing, extra air stones, sponge filters, a battery-powered thermometer, water conditioner, clean buckets, towels, and an emergency power source such as a generator or UPS when practical.
Does the JBJ U.S.A. MAXUM Air Pump use disposable batteries?
No. The MAXUM Air Pump uses a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery, eliminating the need for disposable batteries and ensuring the system is always ready when left plugged in.
Can I travel knowing the MAXUM Air Pump is protecting my aquarium?
While no product can eliminate every risk, leaving the JBJ U.S.A. MAXUM Air Pump connected provides additional peace of mind by automatically responding to unexpected power outages while you are away from home.
Will this help protect beneficial bacteria in my sponge filter?
Yes. If connected to a sponge filter, the MAXUM Air Pump helps maintain water movement and oxygen around the biological media, supporting the beneficial bacteria responsible for biological filtration during temporary outages.
Why should I purchase the JBJ U.S.A. MAXUM Air Pump from Aquatic Arts?
When you purchase from Aquatic Arts, you're buying from a team that depends on reliable life-support equipment every day. We care for thousands of freshwater and saltwater animals and understand firsthand how important dependable emergency aeration can be during unexpected power outages.

How do I know if the battery is charging?
When the MAXUM Air Pump is connected to household power, the built-in battery automatically charges. Refer to the indicator lights described in the user guide to verify charging and operating status.
Can the JBJ U.S.A. MAXUM Air Pump stay plugged in 24 hours a day?
Yes. The MAXUM Air Pump is designed for continuous 24/7 operation. Keeping the unit plugged in allows it to provide everyday aeration while keeping the internal battery fully charged for emergency use.
Do I need to turn the battery backup mode on manually?
No. The battery backup function is automatic. If household power is interrupted, the MAXUM Air Pump immediately switches to battery power without requiring any action from the user.

Can I overcharge the battery?
No. The MAXUM Air Pump is designed to remain plugged in continuously, automatically maintaining the battery at an appropriate charge level.
What is the difference between Continuous Mode and Interval Mode?
Continuous Mode provides uninterrupted airflow for maximum aeration. Interval Mode cycles the pump on and off to reduce power consumption and extend battery runtime during extended outages.
Which operating mode should I use?
Continuous Mode is ideal when maximum oxygenation is needed. Interval Mode is best during prolonged outages when extending battery life becomes more important.
Does aquarium depth affect air pump performance?
Yes. As water depth increases, additional air pressure is required to overcome water pressure. Deeper aquariums and longer airline tubing may slightly reduce airflow compared to shallower installations.
Can I use longer airline tubing with the MAXUM Air Pump?
Yes. Standard aquarium airline tubing can be extended as needed, although longer tubing runs may slightly reduce airflow.
Does the MAXUM Air Pump include airline tubing?
Yes. The MAXUM Air Pump includes the accessories needed to begin operation. Always verify package contents upon receipt.
Does the MAXUM Air Pump include an air stone?
Yes. An air stone is included to help create fine bubbles that improve oxygen exchange within the aquarium.
Why should I use a check valve with my air pump?
A check valve helps prevent aquarium water from siphoning backward into the air pump if airflow stops or the pump is positioned below the water level. Aquatic Arts recommends using a check valve with all aquarium air pumps.
Can I use gang valves or air control valves?
Yes. Standard aquarium gang valves and airflow control valves are compatible with the MAXUM Air Pump and allow you to distribute or fine-tune airflow to multiple aquarium devices.
Should I replace the air stone periodically?
Yes. Air stones naturally become clogged with mineral deposits and organic material over time. Replacing the air stone periodically helps maintain maximum airflow and efficient operation.
Can the MAXUM Air Pump run two sponge filters?
In many cases, yes. Performance depends on the size of the sponge filters, airline length, aquarium depth, and airflow adjustment. Larger sponge filters may perform better when operated individually.
Does the MAXUM Air Pump require routine maintenance?
Very little. Periodically inspect the airline tubing, check valve, air stone, intake filter, and battery backup operation to ensure the system is functioning properly.

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
