Build the Box Around Your Fish

For very small fry, you might combine Vinegar Eels + Microworms + Walter Worms. A breeder working with fish at several stages could choose Vinegar Eels + Microworms + Whiteworms, providing very small foods for young fish and a substantially larger live food for appropriately sized juveniles or adults.

If you're maintaining several batches of fry, three smaller cultures can provide both feeding variety and some backup if one culture slows down. And if you already know your fish love Whiteworms or Microworms, there is nothing stopping you from choosing that food for two or all three selections.

The important thing with this pack is that feeding size depends on the culture selected. Vinegar Eels and the smaller nematodes can be useful for very small fish and fry, while Whiteworms are considerably larger and are better suited to appropriately sized juveniles and adults.




Unlike fish or shrimp, these live foods do not need a traditional aquarium setup. Their “habitat” is the culture itself, and maintaining the right culture conditions allows you to keep producing live food rather than treating each portion as a single feeding.

Because this variety pack includes several different types of cultures, there is not one setup that works for every selection. Microworms, Banana Worms, and Walter Worms are maintained in small culture containers with an appropriate culture medium and food source. Keeping more than one culture going can be useful for breeders who need a dependable supply of small live food.

Vinegar Eels require a different setup and are maintained in their vinegar-based liquid culture. Keep the culture separate from the aquarium and harvest the Vinegar Eels before feeding them to fish rather than pouring culture liquid into the tank.

Whiteworms also have different requirements from the smaller nematode cultures. They are maintained in a moist culture substrate and generally perform best under cooler conditions. Only the worms needed for feeding should be harvested, allowing the remaining colony to continue reproducing.

Building a Live-Food Station

You do not need a dedicated fish room to maintain several cultures. A small area with separate, clearly labeled containers can give you access to different live foods without taking up much space. Keep each culture separate, use clean tools when harvesting, and avoid transferring culture material from one container into another.

For breeders, having cultures established before fry arrive can be especially useful. Instead of waiting until fish hatch to begin producing food, cultures can already be active and ready to harvest when the young fish begin feeding.

The goal is not simply to store the live foods after delivery. With proper maintenance, each selection can become an ongoing culture that you harvest from as needed, giving you a renewable source of live food for your aquarium or breeding projects.

This range is especially useful for breeders because feeding needs change as fish develop. A combination can be built around several stages of the same breeding project, or around different sizes and species of fish kept in a fish room. How to Feed

Harvest a small amount of the selected live food from its culture and offer only what the fish can reasonably consume. Microworms, Banana Worms, Walter Worms, and Whiteworms should be separated from as much of their culture medium as practical before feeding. Vinegar Eels should be harvested from their culture liquid before being offered; do not pour the vinegar culture directly into the aquarium.

Match the food to the mouth size and feeding behavior of the fish rather than relying on age alone. Newly feeding fry of different species can vary considerably in size, while juveniles can quickly become capable of taking larger foods. Start with small amounts, observe the feeding response, and adjust from there.

Young Bettas and gouramis can benefit from very small live foods as they develop. For larger juveniles and adults, Whiteworms are the much more appropriate choice from this pack. They can be particularly useful as part of a varied feeding program for breeding stock and fish that respond strongly to live foods.

Killifish & Medaka

Killifish and Medaka are excellent candidates for a live-food rotation because breeders may be feeding adults, newly feeding fry, and growing juveniles at the same time. Depending on the size of the fry, Vinegar Eels, Microworms, Banana Worms, and Walter Worms can all have a place during early growth.

Microworms, Banana Worms, and Walter Worms can be useful choices for young livebearers, while Whiteworms are better reserved for appropriately sized larger juveniles and adults. Danios, Rasboras & Small Tetras

The fry of danios, rasboras, and small tetras can be extremely small, and the appropriate first food varies considerably by species. Vinegar Eels can be useful for some very small fry, with Microworms, Banana Worms, and Walter Worms becoming options when the young fish are large enough to take them.

For adult nano fish, the smallest cultures may simply be too small to provide a practical meal. Whiteworms can be useful for appropriately sized species, while other live foods such as Daphnia may be a better choice for adults depending on the fish. This is a good example of why feeding compatibility should be based on the actual fish rather than assuming every food in the box is equally useful throughout its life.

Corydoras

The best selection depends on the actual size of the fish. A tiny food being technically edible does not necessarily mean it provides a practical meal for an adult fish.

For very small fish or young juveniles, the smaller worm cultures may remain useful longer. For larger nano species, Whiteworms or other larger live foods may eventually become the more practical choice.

Finicky & Newly Acquired Fish

Live foods can also be useful for fish that are reluctant to investigate prepared foods. Movement can trigger a feeding response in species that naturally hunt small aquatic organisms, making an appropriately sized live food worth trying with selective feeders.

Microworms, Banana Worms, and Walter Worms can become available to shrimp when they settle onto the substrate, plants, wood, moss, or other aquarium surfaces. Whiteworms offer a very different feeding opportunity because of their larger size. Vinegar Eels are less useful as an intentional shrimp food. Can I Use These in a Fish and Shrimp Community Aquarium?

Can I feed these to Corydoras fry?

Can I feed these live foods to dwarf cichlids?

Some micro foods may remain useful for extremely small adult species, while they may be too small to provide a practical meal for larger nano fish. Whiteworms or another larger live food may be more appropriate in those cases.

Can live foods help with finicky fish?

Sometimes. Movement can trigger a natural feeding response in fish that show little interest in prepared foods, which is one reason live foods are commonly used with selective feeders.

Persistent refusal to eat can also indicate stress, unsuitable water conditions, competition, illness, or other problems. Live food can be useful, but it should not be used to ignore an underlying husbandry issue.

Can freshwater shrimp eat these worms?

Freshwater shrimp may opportunistically consume appropriately sized worms they encounter while grazing. Microworms, Banana Worms, and Walter Worms that become accessible on aquarium surfaces may be picked at by shrimp, and larger shrimp may investigate appropriately sized Whiteworms.

These cultures are primarily sold as fish foods, however, and should not replace the broader diet and natural grazing opportunities appropriate for freshwater shrimp.

Are these live foods safe in an aquarium with shrimp?

They can be used in aquariums containing freshwater shrimp. Fish will usually be the intended target, while shrimp may scavenge some of the live food that reaches plants, moss, wood, or the substrate.

As with any aquarium food, avoid excessive feeding that leaves unnecessary organic material in the aquarium.

Are Vinegar Eels good food for shrimp?

Vinegar Eels are not one of the selections we would choose specifically for feeding adult shrimp. Their extremely small size and water-column behavior make them much more useful for very small fish fry.

More importantly, Vinegar Eels must be harvested from their culture before feeding. The vinegar culture liquid should not be poured into a shrimp aquarium.

Can I culture these live foods at home?

Yes. These are live cultures and can be maintained and propagated at home with appropriate care.

The culture methods are not identical. Microworms, Banana Worms, and Walter Worms use their own suitable culture media, Vinegar Eels remain in a vinegar-based liquid culture, and Whiteworms require a different moist culture environment.

Do I need an aquarium to culture these worms?

No. These live foods do not require a traditional display aquarium. Their habitat is the culture itself.

Small, dedicated culture containers can allow an aquarist or breeder to maintain several foods in relatively little space. Each culture should be kept separately and maintained according to its particular requirements.

Should I start my live-food cultures before my fish breed?

Whenever possible, yes. A productive culture is much more useful when it is already established before fry begin feeding.

Breeding fish do not always follow our schedules. Keeping live-food cultures established means food can already be available when eggs hatch or fry become free-swimming rather than starting a culture only after it is needed.

Can I keep more than one culture of the same worm?

Yes, and there can be a practical reason to do so. Maintaining separate cultures of a food you depend on provides some redundancy if one culture slows down or fails.

This is one reason the Choose Your Worms box allows duplicates. Someone who relies heavily on Microworms, for example, may prefer to establish more than one Microworm culture rather than choose three different foods.

Why do live-food cultures sometimes crash?

Live cultures are living systems, and productivity can decline when conditions become unsuitable. Overfeeding the culture, contamination, temperature, moisture, overcrowding, depleted culture media, or simply allowing a culture to age too far can all contribute depending on the type of culture.

Maintaining cultures properly and periodically establishing fresh cultures can help provide a more dependable supply.

Should I keep backup cultures?

For breeders who depend on live food, backup cultures can be very useful. If one culture stops producing when a group of fry needs food, having another established culture can prevent a feeding problem.

The three-pack can therefore be used for variety or redundancy. You do not have to select three different foods.

How do I feed these worms to my fish?

Harvest only the amount needed for the feeding and introduce the live food to the aquarium where the fish can find it. Start conservatively and observe the fish before adding more.

The exact harvesting method depends on the culture. Avoid unnecessarily adding culture media to the aquarium, and always separate Vinegar Eels from their vinegar-based culture liquid before feeding.

Should I feed the entire 2 oz portion at once?

No. A 2 oz live-food portion should not automatically be considered one feeding.

These portions can provide material for feeding and establishing or maintaining cultures. Feed an amount appropriate for the fish and preserve enough of the culture if you want to continue producing the food.

How often should I feed live foods?

There is no single schedule appropriate for every fish. Frequency depends on the species, life stage, condition, breeding goals, and the rest of the diet.

Fry may be fed differently from adult community fish, and breeding projects can require more frequent access to appropriately sized food. Observe the fish and build live foods into a feeding program appropriate for the species you keep.

Do live foods have to be the fish's entire diet?

No. Live foods can be used alongside appropriate prepared and frozen foods.

Their value includes providing different food sizes, movement, natural hunting opportunities, options for very small fry, and additional feeding choices for breeders and selective fish. A varied diet is generally more useful than assuming one food should provide everything.

Can I put the worms directly into a community aquarium?

Appropriate harvested portions can be fed in community aquariums as long as the food is suitable for the fish being kept. Fish may pursue the live food while shrimp, snails, or other scavengers investigate some of what reaches surfaces.

The culture itself should remain separate. Do not place the entire culture and its medium into the aquarium.

Will these worms reproduce in my aquarium?

These foods are maintained under specific culture conditions, and a display aquarium should not be treated as the culture container. Some individuals may survive for a period after feeding, but the reliable way to maintain an ongoing supply is to keep dedicated cultures outside the aquarium.

Which live food stays in the water column?

Vinegar Eels are particularly useful because they remain suspended in the water, making them available to very small fry that feed within the water column.

This is one of the important differences between Vinegar Eels and some of the other small live foods in the pack.

Which live foods are better for bottom-feeding fry?

The behavior of the food matters in addition to size. Microworms and similar foods that become available lower in the aquarium can be useful for appropriately sized fry that forage near the bottom or on surfaces.

This can make them useful in certain Corydoras and other bottom-oriented breeding projects once the fry are large enough to consume them.

Which selection is the smallest live food?

Vinegar Eels are among the smallest live foods available in this pack. Their tiny size and tendency to remain suspended in the water make them particularly useful for certain very small fry.

Even so, some species produce fry that require still smaller foods. Always research the feeding requirements of the particular fish you are breeding.

Which three should I choose if I am new to live foods?

Start with the fish rather than the worms. Ask yourself whether you are feeding tiny fry, larger fry, juveniles, adults, or several life stages.

For a breeding project involving small fry, a combination such as Vinegar Eels + Microworms + Walter Worms gives you several small-food options. If you want a broader size range, Vinegar Eels + Microworms + Whiteworms covers very different feeding stages.

Which combination should I choose for a fish room?

For a fish room containing multiple species and age groups, choosing foods of different sizes can provide the greatest flexibility. Vinegar Eels + Microworms + Whiteworms is one example because it spans from an extremely small live food to a substantially larger one.

If most of your tanks contain fry, three smaller cultures may be more useful. If you already maintain other micro foods, adding multiple Whiteworm portions may make more sense.

Because the best three depend on what you keep. Someone breeding tiny egg-laying fish has very different feeding needs from someone raising guppies, maintaining a rack of juvenile Bettas, or conditioning adult dwarf cichlids.

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
