The Elegant Pencilfish (Nannostomus limatus) is a rare and graceful species, known for its slender body, metallic sheen, and peaceful demeanor. Native to the blackwater streams of Brazil, this species is only sporadically available in the aquarium trade and is prized by advanced hobbyists and biotope keepers. Natural Habitat:
Nannostomus limatus comes from acidic, tannin-rich waters in the Amazon basin of Brazil. These streams are shaded by overhanging vegetation and littered with leaf debris, creating dim, tranquil conditions with minimal water flow.
Aquascaping:
• Plants: Floating plants like Frogbit or Salvinia, plus fine-leaved species like Cabomba, or Java Moss
• Hardscape: Malaysian or Spiderwood driftwood and smooth river stones to mimic streambeds

Diet and Feeding:
These fish are micropredators, feeding on tiny invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, they accept live baby brine shrimp, microworms, daphnia, and powdered or micro-sized dry foods like Ultra Fresh New Born Fish foods.
Tank Mates and Compatibility:
Elegant Pencilfish are peaceful and best kept in groups of 6 or more. Ideal tank mates include other small, calm species like Ember Tetras, pygmy Corydoras, and peaceful shrimp. Avoid larger or nippy fish.
Not all Shrimp Safe:
Generally safe with adult dwarf shrimp. Provide dense plant cover to protect any shrimp fry as they are known to be on the menu.
Breeding:
Breeding is rarely documented but likely follows typical Pencilfish behavior: egg-scattering among fine plants or moss. Use soft, acidic water and remove adults after spawning.

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
