The Electric Yellow Cichlid is one of the most recognizable and beginner-friendly African cichlids in the aquarium hobby. Known for its brilliant lemon-yellow coloration and contrasting black accents on the dorsal fin, this stunning fish brings vibrant color and constant activity to any African cichlid aquarium. Unlike many Mbuna cichlids, the Electric Yellow is relatively peaceful, making it an excellent choice for both experienced cichlid keepers and hobbyists looking to establish their first Lake Malawi community.
Our tank-bred specimens are hardy, adaptable, and already accustomed to aquarium life, making them excellent candidates for long-term success in properly maintained aquariums.

Natural Habitat
The Electric Yellow Cichlid originates from rocky shorelines of Lake Malawi, one of Africa's Great Rift Valley lakes. In nature, these fish inhabit rocky habitats where they weave through caves, crevices, and boulder fields searching for small invertebrates and biofilm. The lake's highly alkaline, mineral-rich water remains remarkably stable year-round, contributing to the specialized water chemistry preferred by Mbuna cichlids.
Our specimens are tank-bred and have been raised in aquarium environments while retaining the vivid coloration and engaging personality that made the species famous.
Aquascaping
Imagine a rocky African shoreline where towering stone formations descend into crystal-clear water. Electric Yellow Cichlids thrive in aquariums designed around extensive rockwork, caves, and territorial boundaries.
Use stacked stone structures, rounded river rock, slate, or cichlid-safe rock formations to create numerous hiding places and visual barriers. Open swimming areas should be maintained between rocky formations to reduce territorial disputes. While heavily planted aquariums are uncommon in traditional Malawi setups, hardy species such as Anubias attached to rockwork can occasionally be incorporated for additional visual appeal.
A sandy or fine gravel substrate complements their natural environment and allows them to exhibit normal digging and territory-maintenance behaviors.
Diet and Feeding
Electric Yellow Cichlids are omnivores that benefit from a varied diet emphasizing vegetable matter. High-quality African cichlid pellets, spirulina-based foods, and herbivore formulas should make up the majority of their diet.
Supplemental foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, daphnia, and other protein-rich offerings can be provided in moderation. Excessive animal protein should be avoided to reduce the risk of digestive issues commonly associated with some Mbuna species.
Feed small portions two to three times daily while avoiding overfeeding.
Tank Mates and Compatibility
Electric Yellow Cichlids are considered one of the most peaceful Mbuna species but still possess the territorial instincts typical of African cichlids.
Suitable tank mates include:
• Other peaceful Mbuna species
• Rusty Cichlids
• Acei Cichlids
• Red Zebra Cichlids
• Synodontis Catfish
• African Cuckoo Catfish
• Larger Rainbowfish in carefully planned communities
Avoid housing them with slow-moving fish, long-finned species, delicate community fish, shrimp, or aggressive predators that may stress or injure them.
Providing ample rockwork and maintaining appropriate stocking densities can significantly reduce aggression.
Shrimp Safe
No. Electric Yellow Cichlids are opportunistic predators that will readily consume dwarf shrimp, small crayfish, and other aquatic invertebrates. They should not be considered shrimp-safe under any circumstances.
Breeding
Electric Yellow Cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders. After spawning on a flat rock or prepared surface, the female collects the fertilized eggs in her mouth and incubates them for approximately three weeks. During this period she typically eats very little while protecting the developing fry.
Once released, the fry are relatively large and can be raised on finely crushed prepared foods, baby brine shrimp, and other suitable fry diets. Breeding often occurs readily in established aquariums with healthy adult groups.
FAQ
Are Electric Yellow Cichlids aggressive?
Compared to most Mbuna cichlids, they are relatively peaceful. However, they remain territorial cichlids and should be housed with compatible species.
Can Electric Yellow Cichlids live in a community aquarium?
Not in a traditional community setup. They are best maintained with other African cichlids that share similar water requirements and temperaments.
What makes them yellow?
Their vivid coloration is a natural characteristic of the species and is enhanced by proper nutrition, excellent water quality, and reduced stress.
How large do Electric Yellow Cichlids get?
Most adults reach approximately 4 to 5 inches in length.
Do they need rockwork?
Yes. Extensive rockwork is highly recommended because it provides shelter, territorial boundaries, and a more natural environment.
Can they live with plecos?
Some larger pleco species can coexist successfully, though many hobbyists prefer catfish better suited to African cichlid conditions, such as Synodontis species.
How many Electric Yellow Cichlids should I keep?
They can be kept individually, as breeding groups, or within larger African cichlid communities. Aquarium size and stocking strategy should guide final numbers.
Are males brighter than females?
Both sexes display the iconic yellow coloration, though mature males may develop slightly more intense coloration and stronger black fin edging.
Why is my Electric Yellow hiding?
New arrivals commonly hide while acclimating. Insufficient rockwork, aggression from tank mates, or poor water conditions may also contribute to excessive hiding.
Are Electric Yellow Cichlids good for beginners?
Yes. They are widely considered one of the best introductory African cichlid species due to their hardiness, beauty, and comparatively mild temperament.

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance.
