The Dojo Loach, also known as the Weather Loach, is a long-bodied, peaceful bottom-dweller that brings both personality and utility to any aquarium. Known for its quirky behavior and ability to detect barometric changes, this loach is a hardy, entertaining addition to cool freshwater tanks and is also an excellent choice for outdoor water gardens and ponds. These specimens are tank-raised and currently 3+ inches in size.
What We Love About This Fish:
• Unique Behavior: Reacts to weather changes and barometric pressure shifts—hence the name “Weather Loach”
• Peaceful Nature: Great for community tanks and friendly with other non-aggressive species
• Algae & Waste Control: Constant scavengers that help keep the bottom clean
• Cold-Water Hardy: Can thrive in a wide temperature range, ideal for outdoor ponds
Natural Habitat:
Native to East Asia, the Dojo Loach typically inhabits slow-moving rivers, marshes, and rice paddies with muddy or sandy bottoms. These environments offer dense vegetation and ample hiding spots, mimicked best in tanks with soft substrate and gentle flow.
Aquascaping:
• Plants: Java Fern, Anubias, Vallisneria, Hornwort
• Hardscape: Smooth river stones, driftwood, and sandy substrate
• Botanicals: Indian Almond Leaves or alder cones add beneficial tannins and hiding coverage
Diet and Feeding:
Dojo Loaches are omnivores and active scavengers. They will readily accept sinking pellets, Repashy gel food, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and even fresh vegetables like zucchini or cucumber slices.
Tank Mates and Compatibility:
Dojo Loaches are extremely peaceful and do well with other non-aggressive species like goldfish, danios, rasboras, and barbs. Avoid housing them with aggressive or territorial fish.
Not Shrimp Safe:
Generally safe with adult shrimp, but may eat shrimp fry or smaller dwarf shrimp in cramped or food-scarce environments. Plenty of hiding spots recommended if cohabiting.
Outdoor Water Feature & Pond Care:
Dojo Loaches are an excellent addition to temperate outdoor ponds and patio water gardens. They tolerate cool water and seasonal fluctuations but should be brought indoors if temps drop below 40°F (4°C). Provide gentle aeration, fine substrate, and shaded hiding places. They enjoy burrowing, so avoid sharp gravel. Their activity level can increase dramatically before storms—a fascinating natural barometer in your own backyard!
Breeding:
Breeding is rare in captivity and typically requires a seasonal temperature drop followed by gradual warming. Egg scattering may occur in thick plants or fine-leaved moss.
Recommended Tank Parameters:
• Temperature: 50° - 77°F (10° - 25°C)
• pH: 6.5 - 8.0
• KH: 4 - 12 dKH
• Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons (larger for groups or pond use)
Care Guidelines:
• Diet: Omnivorous; enjoys variety of prepared, frozen, and live foods
• Social Behavior: Very social, best kept in groups of 3 or more
• Origin: Tank-Raised
• Average Adult Size: 6 – 8 inches (can reach 10+ inches in spacious environments)
• Average Purchase Size: 3+ inches
Bring Life and Personality to the Bottom of Your Tank or Pond!
Whether you’re building a community aquarium or enhancing your backyard water garden, the Dojo Loach is a fantastic choice for both fun and function.

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
Shipping Rate
Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
