Overview

The Columbian Wild Type Guppy is a fascinating F1 tank-bred form of Poecilia reticulata that showcases the natural beauty and behavior of guppies before decades of selective breeding created modern fancy strains. These fish display subtle metallic coloration, natural patterning, and exceptional vigor that make them a favorite among hobbyists seeking a more authentic livebearer experience.

As F1 tank-bred specimens, these guppies are the first captive-bred generation from wild-type stock. They combine the hardiness and adaptability of aquarium-raised fish with many of the characteristics that have made wild guppies one of the most successful freshwater fish species in the world.

Whether maintained in a species-focused breeding colony, a planted community aquarium, or a natural biotope-inspired setup, Columbian Wild Type Guppies provide constant activity, fascinating social interactions, and prolific breeding behavior.

Natural Habitat

The original Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) was first documented throughout northern South America, including portions of Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Trinidad, and surrounding regions. Wild populations inhabit streams, drainage canals, ponds, flooded grasslands, and slow-moving waterways ranging from crystal-clear mountain tributaries to nutrient-rich lowland waters.

Unlike heavily selected fancy guppy strains, Columbian Wild Type Guppies retain many of the natural traits found in wild populations, including streamlined body shapes, strong swimming ability, and more subtle coloration. These F1 tank-bred fish provide hobbyists with a unique opportunity to observe behavior and characteristics closer to those found in nature while benefiting from the adaptability of aquarium-raised stock.

Imagine a slow-moving Colombian stream where sunlight filters through overhanging vegetation and dances across schools of small livebearers weaving between submerged roots and fallen branches. Columbian Wild Type Guppies thrive in aquascapes that capture this natural beauty.

Create a lush environment with flowing stands of Vallisneria, Water Sprite, Hornwort, and Guppy Grass surrounding open swimming corridors where these active fish can display their natural behaviors. Twisted driftwood and branchwork help recreate the tangled root systems found throughout their native waters while providing visual structure and refuge.

To complete the scene, scatter Aquatic Arts Catappa Leaves, Guava Leaves, Alder Cones, and Mixed Leaf Litter across the substrate. These botanicals create the appearance of a naturally aged streambed while encouraging biofilm growth and microfauna that support a thriving aquarium ecosystem. The result is an aquarium that feels less like a fish tank and more like a living slice of South America brought into your home.

Diet and Feeding

These guppies are opportunistic omnivores that naturally consume small aquatic insects, insect larvae, algae, biofilm, detritus, and plant matter. In the aquarium, they readily accept high-quality flakes, micro pellets, frozen foods, and live foods.

For maximum coloration, breeding performance, and overall health, we recommend supplementing staple foods with live or frozen options such as Moina, Daphnia, Baby Brine Shrimp, and Bloodworms. A varied feeding regimen closely mirrors their natural diet and encourages vigorous growth and reproductive success.

Tank Mates and Compatibility

The peaceful nature of Columbian Wild Type Guppies makes them excellent community fish for similarly sized species.

Upper Water Column: Endlers, Ricefish, Norman's Lampeye Killifish

Midwater Companions: Ember Tetras, Green Neon Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, Chili Rasboras

Bottom Dwellers: Corydoras, Otocinclus, Kuhli Loaches, small peaceful Plecos

Invertebrates: Nerite Snails, Mystery Snails, Amano Shrimp, larger Neocaridina colonies

Avoid large cichlids, aggressive barbs, predatory fish, and fin-nipping species that may harass or consume these small livebearers.

Shrimp Safe

Adult shrimp are generally safe when housed with Columbian Wild Type Guppies. However, newly hatched shrimp and small shrimplets may be viewed as food. Dense mosses, floating plants, leaf litter, and complex hardscape significantly improve shrimp survival rates in mixed-species aquariums.

Breeding

Breeding Columbian Wild Type Guppies is straightforward and rewarding. Like all guppies, they are livebearers that give birth to fully formed free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs.

Males constantly display and court females, particularly in well-planted aquariums with stable water conditions. A ratio of one male to two or three females is recommended to reduce stress on females. Fry benefit from dense plant growth, floating vegetation, and botanical cover where they can avoid predation while feeding on naturally occurring microorganisms and biofilm.

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
