The Chocolate Bristlenose Pleco is a fantastic, algae-grazing addition to any freshwater aquarium. With its rich brown coloration and signature bristles that develop as it matures, this peaceful and hardy pleco is a favorite among aquarists. Unlike larger plecos that can outgrow their tanks, this species remains a manageable size, making it perfect for community and planted aquariums. These specimens are locally bred, ensuring excellent health, adaptability, and quality.
What We Love About This Fish:
• Excellent Algae Eater – Helps control algae growth in the aquarium.
• Hardy and Adaptable – Thrives in a variety of water conditions.
• Peaceful Nature – Ideal for community tanks with other non-aggressive species.
• Unique Appearance – Develops bristles on the head, with males exhibiting more prominent growth.
Natural Habitat:
Chocolate Bristlenose Plecos originate from freshwater rivers and streams in South America, where they inhabit areas with submerged driftwood, rock crevices, and leaf litter. They are primarily nocturnal and use their sucker mouths to graze on biofilm, algae, and wood surfaces.
Aquascaping:
• Plants: Java Fern, Anubias, Amazon Sword, and Cryptocoryne provide excellent cover.
• Hardscape: Prefers driftwood like Malaysian or Mopani wood, as it provides a natural food source.
• Botanicals: Indian Almond Leaves and Alder Cones help replicate their natural environment.
Diet and Feeding:
While Chocolate Bristlenose Plecos are excellent algae grazers, they require a well-rounded diet. High-quality sinking wafers, algae tablets, and fresh vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, and blanched spinach are essential. Supplementing with protein-rich foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp ensures optimal health.
Tank Mates and Compatibility:
These plecos are peaceful and can coexist with most community fish. Ideal tank mates include:
✔️ Tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras, Livebearers, and Gouramis
✔️ Other small to medium-sized plecos and bottom dwellers
✔️ Non-aggressive cichlids, such as Apistogrammas
❌ Avoid housing with aggressive species that may harass or outcompete them for food.
Shrimp Safe?
Generally considered shrimp-safe, though they may consume deceased or vulnerable shrimp. Providing ample hiding spots ensures a stress-free environment for shrimp colonies.
Breeding:
Chocolate Bristlenose Plecos are cave spawners, meaning they prefer breeding inside hollow structures or driftwood crevices. Males guard the eggs until hatching, and fry can be raised on algae, biofilm, and specialized pleco foods. These fish are known for their relatively easy breeding in home aquariums.

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
Shipping Rate
Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
