Getting Started with Your Live Feeder Bundle
Set Up a Separate Culture Container:
Transfer your live Moina or Daphnia into a dedicated culture container or small holding tank using aged or dechlorinated water.
Use Green Water to Feed Your Culture:
Add the included Green Water as needed to maintain a light green tint in the culture water. This provides suspended microfoods that help support your live feeder population.
Allow Time for Culture Development:
Give your feeder culture time to settle, feed, and reproduce before harvesting for best results.
Harvest and Feed as Needed:
Once your culture is established, harvest live feeders from the culture container to provide fresh live food for your aquarium.
Important Note
This bundle is designed for hobbyists interested in establishing a live feeder culture. A separate culture container or dedicated setup is recommended for best results.
Live Arrival Guarantee
We stand behind every live culture we ship. All Aquatic Arts live foods and cultures are backed by our 100% Live Arrival Guarantee, plus expert support from our team if you need help getting the most from your culture.
Moina and Daphnia are small freshwater crustaceans naturally found in ponds, seasonal pools, ditches, floodplains, and other nutrient-rich still or slow-moving waters throughout much of the world.
These environments are often rich in suspended algae, microorganisms, and organic matter, allowing their populations to reproduce rapidly when conditions are favorable. In nature, they serve as an important live food source for fry, juvenile fish, and micro predators.
Their abundance in shallow freshwater habitats is one reason many aquarium fish instinctively recognize them as prey, making them an excellent choice for natural feeding enrichment and conditioning.
While this product is designed for culturing rather than display, a simple and functional setup will yield the best results when establishing your live feeder colony.
Culture Container:
A small aquarium, plastic tub, or dedicated culture vessel works well for maintaining Moina or Daphnia cultures.
Bare Bottom Setup:
Most hobbyists prefer a bare-bottom container for easier harvesting and maintenance.
Aeration:
Gentle aeration may be used to improve oxygen exchange, though excessive flow should be avoided.
Lighting:
Moderate ambient light or indirect artificial lighting can help support Green Water use and overall culture stability.
Maintenance Tip:
Keep the culture setup in a stable area away from extreme temperature swings and direct sunlight for best long-term results.
Moina and Daphnia are filter-feeding microcrustaceans that consume suspended microorganisms, algae, and other fine particulate matter from the water column.
In this bundle, the included Aquatic Arts Green Water serves as a primary food source to help support and nourish your live feeder culture.
For best results:
Feed Lightly:
Add small amounts of Green Water as needed to maintain a light green tint in the culture water.
Avoid Overfeeding:
Excess food can foul the culture water and lead to crashes.
Supplemental Foods:
Advanced hobbyists may also experiment with other fine suspended foods such as yeast, spirulina powder, or specialized culture foods in moderation.
Proper feeding is one of the most important factors in maintaining a healthy and productive live feeder culture.
For best results, Moina and Daphnia cultures should be maintained in a species-only culture container without fish or other predators.
Avoid Housing With Fish:
Even small fish will readily consume live feeders and quickly deplete the culture.
Avoid Housing With Predatory Invertebrates:
Shrimp, crayfish, crabs, and other opportunistic feeders may consume or disturb the culture.
Compatible With Separate Culture Systems:
Moina and Daphnia can be maintained in dedicated culture setups alongside Green Water or similar suspended food sources.
Maintaining a predator-free culture environment is one of the most important factors for establishing a productive feeder colony.
Shrimp are not recommended as tank mates in a live feeder culture setup.
While some shrimp may consume only a small number of Moina or Daphnia, they will compete for suspended food sources and may reduce overall culture productivity over time.
For best results, maintain your live feeder culture in a dedicated species-only container free of shrimp and other invertebrates.
Moina and Daphnia reproduce rapidly under favorable conditions, making them excellent live feeder cultures for hobbyists seeking a renewable food source.
These microcrustaceans primarily reproduce through parthenogenesis, meaning females can produce offspring without mating when conditions are stable.
To encourage reproduction:
Maintain Clean Water:
Perform small water changes as needed while avoiding sudden parameter swings.
Provide Consistent Food:
Regular additions of Green Water or other suitable suspended foods help support population growth.
Avoid Overharvesting:
Allow the culture population time to rebound between harvests.
Keep Predators Out:
Maintain the culture in a species-only setup free of fish and other opportunistic feeders.
With proper care, a healthy culture can continue producing feeders for extended periods.
What is included in the Aquatic Arts Live Feeder Bundle?
Each bundle includes your choice of either Live Moina or Live Daphnia paired with Aquatic Arts Green Water.
What is the difference between the Nano Fry Bundle and Growth Bundle?
The Nano Fry Bundle includes Moina, which are smaller and ideal for newly free-swimming fry. The Growth Bundle includes Daphnia, which are slightly larger and better suited for larger fry and juvenile fish.
Why is Green Water included in the bundle?
Green Water is used to help feed and support your live feeder culture, providing suspended microfoods for Moina or Daphnia.
Do I need a separate container for this bundle?
Yes. For best results, a separate culture container or small dedicated setup is recommended.
Can I feed the live feeders directly to my fish instead of culturing them?
Yes, but this bundle is primarily designed to help establish a feeder culture for ongoing harvesting.
How long does it take for the culture to establish?
Culture development time will vary based on setup, feeding, and environmental conditions.
Can I maintain the culture long term?
Many hobbyists successfully maintain cultures long term with proper feeding and husbandry.
Which bundle is better for newly hatched fry?
The Nano Fry Bundle with Moina is generally the better choice for very small fry.
Can adult fish eat these live feeders?
Yes. Many adult nano fish, bettas, killifish, and dwarf cichlids readily consume both Moina and Daphnia.
Why culture live foods at home?
Maintaining a live feeder culture provides a renewable source of fresh live food and supports more natural feeding behaviors.
How large should my culture container be?
A small aquarium, plastic tub, or dedicated culture vessel is typically sufficient. Larger containers may provide greater stability and support larger populations.
Do I need an air stone or filtration for the culture?
Gentle aeration can be helpful but is not always required. Avoid strong flow or filtration that may damage or remove the live feeders.
How often should I feed Green Water to the culture?
Add small amounts as needed to maintain a light green tint in the culture water. Overfeeding can foul the water and harm the culture.
How soon can I begin harvesting from my culture?
Harvest timing will vary depending on setup and population growth, but many hobbyists wait until the culture visibly increases in density before harvesting.
How much of the culture should I harvest at one time?
Avoid harvesting more than a portion of the visible population at once to allow the culture to recover and continue reproducing.
Can I split my culture into multiple containers?
Yes. Many hobbyists split healthy cultures to create backup colonies or expand production.
What temperature is best for culturing Moina and Daphnia?
Room temperature is suitable for most setups. Stable temperatures generally produce better long-term results than fluctuating conditions.
Why did my culture slow down or stop reproducing?
Population declines can occur due to overharvesting, poor water quality, underfeeding, overfeeding, temperature swings, or contamination.
Can I combine Moina and Daphnia in the same culture container?
It is generally recommended to culture them separately, as one species may outcompete the other depending on conditions.
Should I keep a backup culture?
Yes. Many experienced hobbyists maintain multiple cultures in case one crashes.

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
