The Red Dwarf Rasbora is a stunning and diminutive freshwater fish species that adds vibrant color and lively energy to nano and planted aquariums. With its shimmering red hues and delicate schooling behavior, this species makes a striking addition to peaceful community tanks or species-specific setups. Tank-bred specimens offer a sustainable and healthy option for aquarists seeking this rare beauty.

What We Love About This Fish:

  • Vibrant Red Coloration: A deep ruby-red body with iridescent highlights that shimmer under aquarium lighting.
  • Perfect for Nano Tanks: Small size and peaceful nature make it ideal for smaller aquariums.
  • Hardy and Adaptable: A great choice for beginners and experienced aquarists alike.
  • Active Schooling Behavior: Adds dynamic movement to the tank when kept in groups of 8 or more.

Natural Habitat:

The Red Dwarf Rasbora is native to slow-moving, densely vegetated waters of Myanmar. These environments often have soft, slightly acidic water with abundant leaf litter and submerged plants, creating shaded areas and low light conditions.

Aquascaping:

  • Plants: Ideal tank mates for heavily planted tanks with Java Moss, Cryptocorynes, Dwarf Hairgrass, and Anubias. Floating plants such as Frogbit or Red Root Floaters provide shade, which mimics their natural habitat.
  • Hardscape: Include fine-grain substrate, driftwood, and leaf litter for a natural look and to create hiding spots.
  • Botanicals: Indian Almond Leaves and alder cones release tannins, enhancing water quality and encouraging natural behaviors.

Diet and Feeding:

Red Dwarf Rasboras are micro-predators and omnivores. Feed them a varied diet that includes:

  • High-quality micro pellets
  • Fine flake foods
  • Live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops

Regular feedings of live or frozen food will help maintain their vibrant coloration and promote health.

Tank Mates and Compatibility:

The Red Dwarf Rasbora is a peaceful and social species, best kept in groups of 8 or more. Suitable tank mates include:

  • Other small, peaceful fish like Celestial Pearl Danios and Ember Tetras
  • Small shrimp species like Neocaridina or Caridina (though shrimp fry may be at risk)
  • Bottom dwellers like Corydoras or Kuhli Loaches

Avoid aggressive or overly active species that may outcompete them for food.

Shrimp Safe:

Adult shrimp are generally safe with these rasboras, but shrimp fry may be considered prey. Dense plant cover and hiding spots are recommended.

Breeding:

Red Dwarf Rasboras are egg scatterers. To encourage breeding, provide a densely planted tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Slightly cooler water changes and increased live food feedings can trigger spawning. Remove adults after spawning to protect the eggs.

Recommended Tank Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72° - 78° F (22° - 26° C)
  • pH: 6.0 - 7.0
  • KH: 1 - 5 dKH
  • Minimum Tank Size: 5 gallons (10 gallons or larger recommended for schools)

Care Guidelines:

  • Diet: Omnivorous. A mix of micro pellets, flakes, and live/frozen foods is ideal.
  • Social Behavior: Peaceful, thrives in schools of 8 or more.
  • Origin: Tank-bred.
  • Average Adult Size: 0.75 - 1 inch (1.9 - 2.5 cm)
  • Average Purchase Size: 0.5 - 0.75 inch (1.3 - 1.9 cm)

Bring vibrant beauty and natural elegance to your aquarium with the Red Dwarf Rasbora—a perfect choice for nano aquariums and planted tank enthusiasts.

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
