The Xingu Black Neon Tetra carries the quiet intensity of the Rio Xingu itself—dark, reflective, and alive with contrast. A bold lateral stripe cuts through deep charcoal tones, glowing subtly under soft lighting while flashes of silver and bronze emerge as the school turns in unison. Unlike more delicate neon species, this tetra feels grounded—structured, confident, and best appreciated in aquariums designed with depth and intention.

Collected from Brazil and adapted carefully to aquarium life, Moenkhausia heikoi is an excellent choice for aquarists who appreciate subtle strength over exaggerated color.

Moenkhausia heikoi originates from the Rio Xingu basin in Brazil, a tributary of the Amazon known for its warm, often tannin-stained waters and structured river systems. These environments feature submerged roots, scattered leaf litter, and moderate flow. Water clarity can vary seasonally, but filtration through vegetation and organic material creates soft, slightly acidic conditions that favor schooling characins like this species.

he Xingu Black Neon Tetra shines in aquariums designed with depth, shadow, and contrast.

Plants:

Use flowing background stems and rooted midground plants to create vertical structure while preserving open swimming corridors. Amazon Sword, Vallisneria, and floating plants help diffuse light and enhance contrast along the lateral stripe.

Hardscape:

Incorporate branching driftwood, layered root structures, and darker stone to mimic river margins. Create shaded zones and gradual transitions between open and structured areas to encourage confident schooling behavior.

Botanicals:

Aquatic Arts–branded botanicals such as Indian Almond Leaves, Catappa Bark, and Alder Cones are ideal additions. They introduce subtle tannins and microhabitats that replicate natural Xingu conditions, enhance coloration, and contribute to long-term ecosystem stability.

In the wild, this species consumes small invertebrates and organic matter suspended in the water column. In aquariums, offer a varied omnivorous diet including fine granules, micro pellets, and frequent frozen or live foods. Regular protein supplementation improves body fullness and enhances stripe intensity.

Excellent companions include peaceful tetras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids, Corydoras, and small rasboras. Avoid aggressive cichlids or fin-nipping species. Best kept in groups large enough to reduce stress and display natural behavior.

(Caution)
Adult freshwater shrimp are typically safe in well-planted systems. However, due to their active midwater feeding behavior, very small shrimp fry may be predated upon. Dense mosses, leaf litter, and structured hardscape significantly improve shrimp survival rates.

An egg-scattering species that deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Adults do not guard eggs, so removal or separation is recommended for successful breeding. Fry require infusoria-sized foods initially before transitioning to micro foods.

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
