A stunning and relatively rare species in the aquarium trade, the Raccoon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon procyon) is an eye-catching nano fish known for its bold black facial markings resembling a raccoon’s mask. Native to Brazil, this species thrives in planted aquariums and displays natural schooling behavior, making it a fantastic choice for peaceful community setups. Its shimmering silver body, accented by dark bands and subtle iridescence, adds a unique aesthetic to any aquascape.

What We Love About This Fish:

Distinctive Markings: The bold black "mask" across its face gives this tetra a one-of-a-kind appearance.
Great for Planted Tanks: Prefers a well-structured aquarium with plants, driftwood, and shaded areas.
Active and Peaceful: A social schooling species that thrives in groups of six or more.
Hardy and Adaptable: Tolerates a range of water conditions, making it suitable for beginner and advanced hobbyists alike.

Natural Habitat:

Raccoon Tetras originate from slow-moving, tannin-rich waters in Brazil. They are typically found in small tributaries and forest streams where leaf litter, submerged roots, and plant debris create natural hiding spots and provide biofilm for grazing.

Aquascaping:

Plants: Ideal tankmates for Amazon Sword, Anubias, Cryptocoryne, Java Fern, and floating plants like Salvinia or Frogbit.
Hardscape: Enjoys driftwood, root tangles, and leaf litter that mimic its natural habitat.
Botanicals: Indian Almond Leaves, Alder Cones, Botanical Combo Pack, and Catappa Bark help create a natural, blackwater environment.

Diet and Feeding:

The Raccoon Tetra is an omnivore and thrives on a varied diet. Offer high-quality micro pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops. A well-balanced diet enhances their coloration and overall health.

Tank Mates and Compatibility:

A peaceful species that does best with other small, non-aggressive fish. Ideal tank mates include:
• Other small tetras (such as Ember Tetras and Green Neon Tetras)
Dwarf cichlids (such as Apistogramma species)
Corydoras catfish
Otocinclus catfish
Peaceful dwarf gouramis

Avoid aggressive or overly boisterous fish like large barbs and cichlids.

Not Shrimp Safe:

While generally peaceful, adult Raccoon Tetras may prey on shrimp fry. They can coexist with adult Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp in a well-planted tank with ample hiding spaces.

Breeding:

Raccoon Tetras are egg scatterers and require soft, slightly acidic water for successful breeding. A separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop helps increase fry survival rates. Adults do not exhibit parental care and may consume their eggs.

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
