The Amapá Tetra carries the understated elegance of northern Brazil’s river systems—refined, active, and best appreciated in a thoughtfully structured aquarium. Subtle iridescence dances along its flanks as the school moves together, flashing hints of silver and warm undertones beneath softened light. Collected from Brazil, this species thrives in calm, planted aquariums where stability and natural structure define the environment.

For aquarists who value movement, harmony, and authentic regional species, the Amapá Tetra delivers quiet sophistication without demanding excessive intervention.

Hyphessobrycon amapaensis originates from freshwater systems in the Amapá region of northern Brazil. These waterways are typically warm, soft, and slightly acidic, often influenced by organic material and seasonal water changes. Submerged roots, leaf litter, and gentle flow create ideal conditions for schooling characins adapted to structured but calm environments.

The Amapá Tetra performs best in aquariums that emphasize softness, balance, and layered structure.

Plants:

Use flowing background stems and midground rooted plants to create vertical texture while preserving open swimming lanes. Amazon Sword, Rotala, and Vallisneria complement their schooling nature. Floating plants help diffuse light and enhance subtle body coloration.

Hardscape:

Incorporate driftwood, branching root structures, and smooth river stones. Create shaded zones and gradual transitions between open water and structured margins to encourage confident midwater schooling.

Botanicals:

Aquatic Arts–branded botanicals such as Indian Almond Leaves, Catappa Bark, and Alder Cones help replicate their native environment. These additions introduce light tannins, visual warmth, and biological stability that support long-term health and natural behavior.

In the wild, Amapá Tetras consume small invertebrates and organic particulates. In aquariums, provide a varied omnivorous diet including fine granules, micro pellets, and regular frozen or live Foods supplementation. Frequent small feedings maintain body condition and encourage vibrant schooling activity.

Best paired with peaceful tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, Corydoras, and dwarf cichlids in appropriately sized aquariums. Avoid aggressive species or larger predatory fish that may intimidate or outcompete them.

(Caution)
Adult freshwater shrimp are typically safe in planted aquariums. Due to their active feeding behavior, very small shrimp fry may be vulnerable unless ample mosses, botanicals, and hardscape hiding spaces are provided.

An egg-scattering species that deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Adults do not guard eggs, so separation or removal improves hatch success. Fry require infusoria-sized foods initially before progressing to micro foods.

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
