The Tiger Swordtail is a bold, eye-catching variant of the classic Swordtail. Its striking vertical striping resembles that of a tiger, set against a backdrop of orange, gold, or cream tones. Swordtails are named for the elongated lower lobe of the male’s tail fin, giving them a unique and elegant silhouette. This tank-bred strain is both hardy and active, making it ideal for beginner and experienced aquarists alike.

What We Love About This Fish:

• Unique tiger-striped pattern with vibrant contrasting colors
• Peaceful and social, great for community tanks
• Very hardy and adaptable to a wide range of conditions
• Active swimmers that thrive in planted aquariums

Natural Habitat:

Native to Central America, wild Swordtails are found in streams, rivers, and pools with clear to slightly turbid water. They inhabit areas rich in aquatic vegetation, with moderate current and abundant cover from predators.

Aquascaping:

• Plants: Vallisneria, Bacopa, Hornwort, Amazon Sword, and Java Fern all provide excellent cover and help replicate the Swordtail’s natural habitat.
Hardscape: Incorporate river rocks, smooth stones, and driftwood to create hiding spots and soft boundaries.
Botanicals: Add leaf litter or Indian almond leaves for tannin release and environmental enrichment. We recommend our Aquatic Arts Botanical Combo Pack, which includes a curated mix of leaves, seed pods, and driftwood pieces perfect for Swordtails and other livebearers.

Diet and Feeding:

Tiger Swordtails are omnivores that benefit from a varied diet rich in both protein and plant matter. A staple food should be supplemented with occasional treats.

Recommended food:
Ultra Fresh Royal Guppy Mignon Pellets – Shrimp Delight Formula – an excellent choice for Swordtails, providing a balanced mix of seafood proteins and plant-based nutrients to enhance coloration and health. These micro pellets are perfectly sized and easy to digest, making them ideal for daily feeding.

Tank Mates and Compatibility:

Swordtails are peaceful but active, making them suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive fish such as Tetras, Corydoras, Mollies, Platies, and Rasboras. Avoid housing with fin-nippers or overly aggressive species.

Maybe Shrimp Safe:

Generally safe with adult shrimp. Fry may be at risk, so provide adequate plant cover if cohabiting with breeding shrimp colonies.

Breeding:

Livebearers by nature, Swordtails breed readily in home aquariums. Females give birth to free-swimming fry after a gestation of about 28 days. Provide floating plants or dense cover to protect fry from adult fish.

Recommended Tank Parameters:

• Temperature: 72° - 82° F (22° - 28° C)
• pH: 7.0 - 8.3
• KH: 8 - 20 dKH
• Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons

Care Guidelines:

• Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts flake food, micro pellets, blanched vegetables, and live/frozen treats.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and social. Best kept in groups or a ratio of 1 male to 2+ females.
Origin: Tank-Bred
Average Adult Size: 3 – 4 inches (7.6 – 10.2 cm)
Average Purchase Size: 1.25 – 2 inches (3.2 – 5 cm)

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
