The Pearl Cichlid is a bold and highly underrated South American cichlid prized for its shimmering iridescent spotting, intelligent personality, and engaging interactive behavior. Despite its species name, Geophagus brasiliensis is not a true earth-eating Geophagus, but it does share the same habit of sifting substrate and reshaping its environment. Tank bred specimens adapt exceptionally well to aquarium life and develop striking coloration as they mature, making them an excellent centerpiece for larger semi-aggressive freshwater aquariums.

The original Pearl Cichlid (Geophagus brasiliensis) was first documented in coastal river systems, lagoons, and freshwater tributaries throughout eastern Brazil and Uruguay. Unlike many blackwater South American cichlids, this species is often found in more mineral-rich waters with sandy or muddy bottoms and moderate vegetation.

Designing for Pearl Cichlids means accepting one simple truth: this fish intends to participate in the aquascape.

Begin with a broad bed of soft sand or fine gravel that allows the fish to sift, dig, and reshape its environment naturally. Pearl Cichlids are active substrate workers, constantly moving material in search of food or while establishing territory.

Use larger stones, anchored driftwood, and sturdy hardscape to create structure that can withstand their activity. Build visual barriers and territorial boundaries throughout the aquarium using rock piles, root tangles, and elevated hardscape zones.

Planting should focus on hardy epiphytes and anchored species rather than delicate rooted plants, as this fish will regularly redecorate to its liking.

A proper Pearl Cichlid aquarium should feel like a weathered South American riverbank—raw, rugged, and alive with movement.

Pearl Cichlids are eager omnivores with strong appetites and benefit from a varied, protein-rich diet. A staple of quality cichlid pellets or sinking carnivore pellets should be supplemented with frozen bloodworms, mysis shrimp, krill, brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable-based foods.

Their enthusiastic feeding response makes them a highly engaging species during feeding time.

Pearl Cichlids do best with robust tank mates that can hold their own in a semi-aggressive environment. Suitable companions may include severums, silver dollars, larger rainbowfish, giant danios, and similarly tempered cichlids in appropriately sized aquariums.

Avoid timid fish, delicate species, and bottom dwellers that may compete directly for territory.

No. Pearl Cichlids will prey on shrimp, snails, and other small invertebrates.

Pearl Cichlids are substrate spawners that form strong breeding pairs. Once paired, they become highly territorial and will clean a flat spawning site before laying eggs. Both parents actively guard and fan the eggs and continue protecting the fry after hatching.

s Geophagus brasiliensis a true Geophagus?

Not technically. Despite the name, many hobbyists do not classify it among the true earth-eating Geophagus species.

Semi-aggressive, especially as they mature or pair off.

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
