Malaysian Trumpet Snail (Melanoides tuberculata) – Live Scavenger or Feeder Snail

Available in Two Sizes: Small (0.25"–0.5") & Large (0.5"–1")

The Malaysian Trumpet Snail is a peaceful, algae-grazing workhorse known for its incredible scavenging ability and helpful burrowing behavior. Native to Southeast Asia, this freshwater snail thrives in planted tanks, paludariums, and even aquariums with more aggressive species when offered as a natural food source.

We now offer this species in two sizes to suit your tank’s needs:

  • Small (0.25"–0.5") – Ideal for feeding snail-eating species such as Pea Puffers, Assassin Snails, Crayfish, Loaches, and many Cichlids. These snails grow fast, making them a replenishable live food option for predators that require stimulation and natural hunting behavior.

  • Large (0.5"–1") – Great for tanks where you want long-term cleanup crew members that burrow, stir substrate, and consume algae, detritus, and decaying plant matter.

Unlike pest snails that damage plants, Malaysian Trumpet Snails do not harm healthy live plants and instead focus their energy on biofilm, waste, and algae. Their unique conical shell adds texture and interest to any tank layout, and their burrowing nature promotes oxygenation and nutrient flow in the substrate.

What We Like About These Snails:

  • Peaceful and low-maintenance, perfect for community aquariums.

  • Conical shell shape with varying coloration, from beige to brown.

  • Reproduces in freshwater, helping maintain your clean-up crew long-term.

  • Safe for all plants and excellent for sifting sand or fine gravel.

  • Fast-growing and suitable as a live food source when small.

Recommended Tank Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72° - 86° F (22° - 30° C)

  • pH: 6.5 - 7.5

  • KH: 2 - 12 dKH

  • Minimum tank size: 3 - 5 gallons

Care Guidelines:

  • Diet: Constant grazer on biofilm, algae, and detritus. Will also accept blanched vegetables and algae wafers in tanks with low natural food availability. Avoid copper-based medications.

  • Behavior: Completely peaceful and non-aggressive toward tankmates.

  • Origin: Southeast Asia

  • Average Adult Size: 1 - 1.5 inches (2.5 - 3.8 cm)

  • Average Purchase Size: Small (0.25”–0.5”) or Large (0.5”–1”)

Please Note:

This species is livebearing and very prolific under ideal conditions. Overfeeding or lack of natural population control (e.g., predators) may result in large population booms. In well-managed aquariums, they are one of the best natural substrate cleaners available.

The remarkably prolific, livebearing Malaysian Trumpet Snail is excellent for eating algae, scavenging, and sifting substrate! We are proud to offer specimens bred in house at Aquatic Arts!

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
