Overview

The Koi Tuxedo Guppy combines two of the most popular traits in the guppy hobby: the vibrant orange, red, and white coloration associated with Koi guppies and the distinctive dark rear-body coloration of the Tuxedo strain. The result is a striking fish that immediately draws attention as it swims through a planted aquarium.

This variety is available in both Standard Fin and Dumbo Ear forms. Dumbo Ear males develop enlarged pectoral fins that resemble the oversized ears of an elephant, creating an especially elegant swimming motion. Female Dumbo Ear guppies carry the Dumbo Ear genetics but do not develop the dramatically enlarged pectoral fins seen in males. Female Dumbo Ear guppies generally resemble standard females in appearance.

Tank-bred and fully adapted to aquarium life, Koi Tuxedo Guppies are active, peaceful, and easy to care for, making them an excellent choice for both beginning and experienced aquarists.

Natural Habitat

The original Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) originates from northern South America and portions of the Caribbean, where it inhabits slow-moving streams, ponds, canals, and vegetated waterways rich in plant growth and microfauna.

The Koi Tuxedo Guppy is a selectively bred ornamental strain developed through generations of captive breeding to combine the bright Koi coloration with the dark-bodied Tuxedo pattern. Both the Standard Fin and Dumbo Ear varieties are the result of careful selective breeding and do not occur naturally in the wild.

Aquascaping

Koi Tuxedo Guppies are at their best in planted aquariums where their bright coloration contrasts against lush green plants and darker hardscape elements. Their active nature allows them to utilize the entire upper and middle portions of the aquarium, creating constant movement throughout the display.

We especially enjoy pairing them with Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri), Guppy Grass (Najas guadalupensis), Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides), and Anubias (Anubias spp.). These plants provide cover for fry while helping create a thriving aquarium ecosystem.

Floating plants such as Amazon Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum) and Red Root Floater (Phyllanthus fluitans) help diffuse lighting and provide a more natural environment while encouraging fry survival.

Natural hardscape elements such as Malaysian Driftwood, Spiderwood, and river stone complement their coloration while maintaining open swimming space. Aquatic Arts Indian Almond Leaves, Guava Leaves, and Alder Cones also make excellent additions by encouraging biofilm development and adding natural botanical enrichment.

Diet and Feeding

Like most guppies, Koi Tuxedo Guppies are opportunistic omnivores that naturally consume small insects, zooplankton, algae, biofilm, and plant matter.

In the aquarium, a quality staple food should form the foundation of their diet. Supplemental offerings such as Live Moina (Moina macrocopa), Live Daphnia (Daphnia spp.), Baby Brine Shrimp (Artemia nauplii*), and frozen foods help maintain vibrant coloration, strong breeding condition, and overall health.

In mature planted aquariums, these guppies will often spend part of the day grazing on biofilm and naturally occurring microorganisms that develop on plants, botanicals, and hardscape.

Tank Mates and Compatibility

One of the reasons guppies remain among the most popular aquarium fish in the world is their peaceful temperament and excellent compatibility with other community species.

We particularly enjoy keeping Koi Tuxedo Guppies with peaceful schooling fish such as Ember Tetras (Hyphessobrycon amandae), Chili Rasboras (Boraras brigittae), Kubotai Rasboras (Microdevario kubotai), Harlequin Rasboras (Trigonostigma heteromorpha), and White Cloud Mountain Minnows (Tanichthys albonubes).

Bottom-dwelling species such as Corydoras Catfish (Corydoras spp.), Otocinclus (Otocinclus spp.), and Kuhli Loaches (Pangio kuhlii) occupy different areas of the aquarium and help create a balanced community.

Adult Red Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi), Amano Shrimp (Caridina multidentata), Zebra Nerite Snails (Neritina natalensis), and Mystery Snails (Pomacea diffusa) also make excellent companions.

We recommend avoiding aggressive fish, fin nippers, and larger predatory species that may harass guppies or damage their fins.

Ecosystem Match

Koi Tuxedo Guppies are ideal for planted community aquariums featuring peaceful schooling fish, dwarf shrimp, algae-eating invertebrates, floating plants, and botanical enrichment.

Shrimp Safe

Koi Tuxedo Guppies are generally considered shrimp compatible and can coexist successfully with many freshwater shrimp species.

Adult Red Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi), Blue Dream Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi), Yellow Golden Back Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi), and Amano Shrimp (Caridina multidentata) are typically ignored by adult guppies.

As with many small omnivorous fish, newly hatched shrimplets may occasionally be consumed if sufficient cover is not available. Dense growths of Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri), Guppy Grass (Najas guadalupensis), floating plants, and botanical leaf litter can significantly improve shrimp survival rates.

Shrimp Compatibility Rating

Adult Shrimp: Excellent Compatibility

Juvenile Shrimp: Good Compatibility with adequate cover

Newly Hatched Shrimplets: Moderate Risk

Breeding

Koi Tuxedo Guppies are livebearers and among the easiest freshwater fish to breed. Healthy females typically give birth every 28 to 35 days and produce fully formed, free-swimming fry.

Aquariums containing dense cover greatly improve fry survival rates. We often recommend Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri), Guppy Grass (Najas guadalupensis), Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides), and floating plants because they create excellent refuge areas for young fish.

When breeding Dumbo Ear specimens, it is important to understand that only male Dumbo Ear guppies develop the enlarged pectoral fins that give the variety its name. Female Dumbo Ear guppies carry the genetics but generally do not display the oversized fins.

Selective breeding can help preserve and enhance the vibrant Koi coloration, dark Tuxedo patterning, and Dumbo Ear traits within a breeding colony.

Koi Tuxedo Guppies are known for their bright orange, red, white, and black coloration, while Platinum Blue Dragon Guppies display metallic platinum bodies accented by blue dragon-scale patterning. Which guppy variety is easiest to breed?

Neither fish is objectively better. Koi Tuxedo Guppies are generally chosen for their larger size, flowing finnage, and vibrant coloration, while Endlers are appreciated for their hardiness, activity level, and natural appearance. Both make excellent additions to planted community aquariums.

What is the best aquarium setup for Koi Tuxedo Guppies?

We recommend a planted aquarium featuring live plants, floating vegetation, gentle filtration, quality prepared foods, and peaceful community tank mates. This setup helps showcase their coloration while encouraging natural behavior.

Why are Koi Tuxedo Guppies so popular?

Their popularity comes from the combination of bright coloration, peaceful temperament, ease of care, and active behavior. They offer many of the visual qualities hobbyists seek in ornamental fish while remaining beginner friendly and easy to breed.
