The Yurishisu Medaka is a stunning and rare variant of the beloved Japanese Ricefish, selectively bred for its striking appearance. With glowing silvery-white bodies and vibrant orange markings concentrated on the head and face, these fish resemble miniature koi when viewed from above—complete with shimmering, metallic “sparkles” that flash in the light. This top-view beauty makes them an exceptional choice for shallow planted aquariums, rimless tanks, or outdoor ponds.
Still relatively new to the aquarium hobby outside of Japan, the Yurishisu variant is prized for both its rarity and elegance. Like other medaka, they are extremely hardy, peaceful, and easy to care for—making them a show-stopping species that's suitable for beginners and experienced keepers alike.
What We Love About This Fish:
• Beautiful Sparkling Coloration: Orange head pattern with silvery, shimmering bodies.
• Top-View Appeal: Koi-like appearance when viewed from above—ideal for shallow tanks or ponds.
• Hardy and Peaceful: Very adaptable and easy to care for in a wide range of setups.
• Rare Variant: A newer and uncommon addition to the ricefish world.
Natural Habitat:
Medaka ricefish are native to Japan and Eastern Asia, where they are found in slow-moving streams, rice paddies, and marshes. They are incredibly resilient and tolerate a range of temperatures and conditions, which makes them an ideal choice for both indoor aquariums and outdoor mini-ponds.
Aquascaping:
• Plants: Floating plants like Frogbit or Water Lettuce enhance their top-view appeal. Submerged plants like Hornwort, Anacharis, and Rotala offer shelter and breeding surfaces.
• Hardscape: Smooth pebbles, moss-covered rocks, and gentle slopes for shallow areas.
• Botanicals: Indian Almond Leaves or alder cones can promote natural behavior and improve water quality.
Diet and Feeding:
Yurishisu Medaka are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet. Offer high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and occasional live or frozen treats like daphnia, baby brine shrimp, or moina for optimal health and coloration.
Tank Mates and Compatibility:
Peaceful and social, they do well in groups and with other gentle species like small rasboras, endlers, and dwarf shrimp. Avoid fin-nippers or larger aggressive species.
Shrimp Safe?:
Yes, safe with adult dwarf shrimp. Shrimp fry may be at risk unless plenty of hiding places are provided.
Breeding:
Like other medaka, Yurishisu Ricefish breed readily in the right conditions. Provide floating plants or spawning mops, and you'll often see females carrying fertilized eggs near their anal fins before depositing them. Hatchlings can be raised on infusoria or powdered fry food.

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
Shipping Rate
Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
