Water Hyacinth is a very popular, prolific, and durable floating plant with exceptional denitrification and water clarifying qualities for both ponds and aquariums!

(All of our floating plants are grown at an outdoor nursery, there is a chance of duckweed being in any floating plant package)

Water Hyacinth (Eichoria crassipes), often confused with the similar American Frogbit (Limnobium spongia), is a floating plant that is native to the Amazon River basin, but has been introduced to many waterways throughout the world. It often produces beautiful lavender flowers. It is much larger than many other floating plants, so it is an excellent option for providing shade and cover for more reclusive species. Its leaves are substantial and will float at the water's surface, which can also be very useful for small semi-aquatic animals in larger terrariums and paludariums. Water Hyacinth has remarkable denitrification and water clarification abilities, so it is very useful in helping to keep water clean.

Care is easy for Water Hyacinth. Since it is a floating plant, it does not require planting in the substrate and only its underside should be wet. It is extremely prolific in ponds, but is generally slower to propagate in the aquarium. It requires high lighting and should receive full sun in ponds. When it is thriving, Water Hyacinth can easily overrun an aquarium or pond, so some plants will need to be removed as they multiply or else they will prevent gas exchange and light penetration. It requires relatively still water with very little movement, so it should not be placed in the current of filter outflow. It does not typically overwinter or tolerate cold temperatures.

Like most plants, Water Hyacinth will benefit from supplementation such as Seachem Flourish, Flourish Excel, nitrogen, iron, and other plant supplements.

No aquarium plant distributor/nursery/wholesaler/retailer can or will guarantee their plants to be 100% snail free. We cannot guarantee our plants will be snail free.

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
