The Tequila Goodeid (Zoogoneticus tequila) is a critically endangered livebearer native to a single watershed in western Mexico. Once considered extinct in the wild, this species has been preserved thanks to passionate conservation efforts and responsible breeding by aquarists. These specimens are USA bred from long-term captive domestic stock—not wild-caught—ensuring ethical sourcing and continued support of this species’ survival.
Named for the Teuchitlán River near the town of Tequila in Jalisco, Mexico, this species is admired for its bold body shape and distinct coloration. Males display an orange tail base with shimmering scales, while females are larger and exhibit a more subtle silver pattern. These fish thrive in cooler, well-oxygenated aquariums with plenty of plant cover and should always be kept in social groups.
What We Love About the Tequila Goodeid:
• Critically endangered species with a compelling conservation story
• USA bred from domestically raised, non-wild stock
• Peaceful temperament and ideal for planted community tanks
• Helps preserve a species once nearly lost to extinction
Natural Habitat:
This species is native to the Río Teuchitlán in west-central Mexico. Its natural habitat includes spring-fed streams and pools with aquatic vegetation, moderate flow, and clear, cool water. It prefers mineral-rich, alkaline conditions.
Aquascaping:
• Plants: Ideal tankmates include Hornwort, Java Moss, Guppy Grass, and Vallisneria
• Hardscape: Smooth river stones, branches, and areas for cover
• Botanicals: Indian almond leaves or alder cones may help promote biofilm and offer refuge for fry
Diet and Feeding:
The Tequila Goodeid is an omnivore and benefits from a varied diet. Offer high-quality flake food, micro pellets, spirulina, blanched veggies (such as zucchini), and live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, or grindal worms. They graze on biofilm and algae in planted tanks.
Tank Mates and Compatibility:
Very peaceful. Best kept with other gentle species that prefer cooler temperatures. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping tankmates. Keep in groups of 6 or more with a ratio of 2–3 females per male.
Shrimp Safe:
✔ Yes – Safe with adult shrimp. May eat newly hatched shrimp.
Breeding:
A livebearing goodeid. Unlike guppies or mollies, fry are larger and born less frequently, but in excellent health. Provide dense cover for fry survival. These are USA bred from captive stock that has been domestically maintained for generations—no wild specimens or recent imports.

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
Shipping Rate
Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
