The Longfin Albino Cory Catfish (Corydoras aeneus "Longfin Albino") is a selectively bred form of the Bronze Corydoras known for its soft pale coloration and elongated, flowing fins. In the aquarium, this fish has a constant gentle motion, gliding across the substrate in tight social groups as it searches for food.

Tank-bred Longfin Albino Cory Catfish are especially well adapted to community aquariums and planted setups. They are active, peaceful, and highly social, often interacting closely with one another as they forage. Their long fins give them a graceful appearance, especially when moving over dark sand or through shaded areas beneath driftwood.

Aquarists enjoy this Corydoras for its combination of hardiness and elegance. It provides steady bottom-level activity without disturbing plants or competing aggressively for space, making it a reliable choice for balanced community aquariums.

Natural Habitat

Wild-Type Species

Corydoras aeneus originates from slow-moving rivers, floodplains, and tributaries across South America, including regions of Venezuela, Colombia, and Trinidad. These habitats are typically soft-bottomed with sand, silt, leaf litter, and dense marginal vegetation.

In nature, they spend most of their time close to the substrate, using their barbels to locate small invertebrates, organic debris, and biofilm. Seasonal flooding creates nutrient-rich environments that support constant foraging activity.

Selectively Bred or Color Morphs

The original Corydoras aeneus was first documented in South America. This variety is based on that species and has been selectively developed in the aquarium hobby to emphasize its albino coloration and elongated finnage while retaining the peaceful, social behavior of the wild form.

This is a tank-bred specimen.

Painting the Aquarium

A natural setup for Longfin Albino Cory Catfish focuses on soft substrates, shaded resting areas, and open bottom space for group movement. Dark sand highlights their pale coloration, while driftwood and broad-leaf plants create structure and cover.

A gently flowing planted aquarium best showcases their schooling behavior, especially when combined with calm midwater fish above.

Plants

Amazon Swords, Cryptocoryne, Java Fern, Anubias, and floating plants all work well. Dense planting in the mid and background helps reduce stress while keeping the foreground open.

Hardscape

Smooth driftwood, rounded river stones, and fine sand are ideal. Sharp gravel should be avoided to protect barbels and fins.

Aquatic Arts Botanicals

Aquatic Arts Botanicals such as Indian Almond Leaves, alder cones, seed pods, and botanical litter help promote biofilm growth and create a natural riverbed-style environment.

Diet and Feeding

Longfin Albino Cory Catfish are omnivorous scavengers that should receive a varied diet designed specifically for bottom-feeding fish. High-quality sinking pellets and wafers should form the foundation of their feeding program.

For maximum health, growth, and breeding condition, supplement regularly with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, blackworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and mosquito larvae. While they help consume uneaten food that reaches the substrate, they should always receive dedicated feedings rather than relying on leftovers from other fish.

Tank Mates and Compatibility

These peaceful catfish are excellent additions to community aquariums and are compatible with a wide range of non-aggressive species.

Ideal tank mates include tetras, rasboras, rainbowfish, danios, pencilfish, peaceful gouramis, livebearers, other Corydoras species, Otocinclus, and small plecos. Their calm disposition allows them to integrate easily into planted aquariums and mixed-species community displays.

Avoid housing them with large predatory fish, aggressive cichlids, or species known for fin-nipping behavior that may damage their extended fins.

Shrimp Safe

Yes. Longfin Albino Cory Catfish are considered shrimp-compatible and generally ignore healthy adult dwarf shrimp. Their peaceful nature makes them a popular choice for larger shrimp aquariums. Newly hatched shrimplets may occasionally be consumed if encountered, so dense mosses, leaf litter, and other hiding areas are recommended when breeding shrimp.

Breeding

Longfin Albino Cory Catfish are egg-scattering fish that readily spawn under favorable conditions. Frequent water changes, cooler water temperatures, and protein-rich foods often stimulate breeding activity. Females deposit adhesive eggs on glass, plants, and hardscape surfaces. The eggs hatch within several days, and the fry can be raised on newly hatched brine shrimp, microworms, and finely powdered prepared foods.

FAQ

Are Longfin Albino Cory Catfish good beginner fish?

Yes. Their hardiness, peaceful nature, and simple care requirements make them one of the best catfish species for beginner aquarists.

How many Longfin Albino Cory Catfish should I keep?

A minimum group of six is recommended, though larger groups often display more natural and active social behaviors.

Do Longfin Albino Corys need sand?

Fine sand is strongly recommended because it allows natural sifting behavior and helps protect their sensitive barbels.

Are they true algae eaters?

No. They may consume small amounts of algae and leftover food but should not be relied upon for algae control.

Why do Cory Catfish swim to the surface?

This is normal behavior. Corydoras can gulp atmospheric air as a supplemental source of oxygen.

Can they live with Bettas?

Yes, in most cases. Their peaceful nature and bottom-dwelling habits usually allow them to coexist successfully with non-aggressive Bettas.

Are Longfin Albino Corys different from regular Albino Corys?

Yes. The primary difference is their elongated fins, which create a more elegant and ornamental appearance.

How long do Longfin Albino Cory Catfish live?

With proper care, they commonly live between 5 and 10 years.

Can they be kept with other Corydoras species?

Absolutely. They often school and interact with other Corydoras species in mixed groups.

What are the advantages of tank-bred and locally bred fish?

Tank-bred and locally bred fish are generally more accustomed to aquarium conditions, experience less shipping stress, and support sustainable captive breeding efforts within the aquarium hobby.
