A classic livebearer with a bold twist, the Liberty Molly is a rare and strikingly patterned molly species featuring red, blue, and black hues across its fins and body. Unlike other mollies, Liberty Mollies are known for their assertive personalities and vivid coloration—especially in males. These locally bred specimens are hardier, better acclimated to aquarium life, and perfect for hobbyists looking to keep something with character and color. Choose from individual males, females, or breeding pairs for your aquarium.

What We Love About This Fish:

Uncommon Beauty: Tri-colored fins with red, black, and blue make this molly stand out in any setup.
Locally Bred: Acclimated to aquarium life, making them hardier and more sustainable.
Active and Bold: Adds movement and attitude to the tank.
Livebearing Species: A great candidate for home breeding projects.

Natural Habitat:

Native to coastal freshwater streams and brackish estuaries in Central America, Liberty Mollies thrive in warm, mineral-rich waters with moderate flow and dense vegetation.

Aquascaping:

Plants: Consider hardy species like Hornwort, Vallisneria, and Java Fern. Floating plants like Frogbit also work well for cover.
Hardscape: Use rounded stones, driftwood, and crushed coral or aragonite to help maintain a higher pH and hardness.
Botanicals: Our Aquatic Arts Botanical Combo Pack is a great starting point. For Liberty Mollies, we also recommend cinnamon bark, loquat leaves, and terminalia arjuna leaves, which provide tannins, stimulate natural grazing behavior, and promote a healthy slime coat. These botanicals also help enrich the water with minerals beneficial to livebearers.

Diet and Feeding:

Liberty Mollies are omnivores with a strong appetite for both plant matter and protein. Feed them a varied diet rich in fiber and nutrients. We recommend Ultra Fresh Vegetables Shrimp Pie as an excellent staple—it’s packed with seaweed, vegetables, and shrimp, perfect for mollies. Supplement with live or frozen daphnia, spirulina, or blanched vegetables like zucchini.

Tank Mates and Compatibility:

Liberty Mollies are semi-aggressive compared to most mollies and may nip at slower or long-finned tank mates. They do best with other robust species such as Swordtails, Platies, larger Tetras, and fast-moving Rasboras. Avoid keeping them with timid or slow-moving fish.

Not Shrimp Safe:

Caution advised. Liberty Mollies may harass or eat small or baby shrimp. Adult Neocaridina shrimp may be safe in large, well-planted tanks with hiding places.

Breeding:

These fish are livebearers and will reproduce regularly in the home aquarium. For best results, keep one male with two or more females and provide ample plant cover or botanicals where fry can hide. Separation tanks or breeder boxes can help increase fry survival rates.

Recommended Tank Parameters:

Temperature: 72° - 80° F (22° - 27° C)
pH: 7.5 - 8.5
KH: 10 - 20 dKH
Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons (larger if keeping in groups)

Care Guidelines:

Diet: Omnivorous – feed a balanced mix of veggie-rich and protein foods.
Social Behavior: Semi-aggressive; active swimmers.
Origin: Locally bred (USA)
Average Adult Size: 2.5 – 3 inches (6.3 – 7.6 cm)
Average Purchase Size: 1.5 – 2 inches (3.8 – 5 cm)

Add bold color and personality to your tank with Liberty Mollies – Locally Bred. These energetic livebearers offer a vibrant alternative to standard mollies and thrive in a properly maintained setup with just a touch of extra attitude.

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
