The L004 Angelicus Pleco (Hypancistrus sp. L004) is one of the most recognizable and sought-after spotted plecos in the aquarium hobby. Its deep charcoal body covered in bright white spots creates a dramatic contrast that has made it a favorite among pleco collectors for decades. As the fish matures, the spots often become more defined, giving the species its distinctive “angelicus” appearance.
Native to Brazilian river systems within the Amazon basin, this species belongs to the Hypancistrus genus, a group of plecos known for their manageable size, bold patterns, and interesting cave-dwelling behavior. Unlike many larger plecos, the L004 remains relatively compact, making it suitable for well-structured aquariums where caves, rockwork, and driftwood provide essential shelter.
When provided with stable water conditions and plenty of hiding places, the L004 Angelicus Pleco becomes an engaging bottom-dwelling species that adds both pattern and personality to the aquarium.
What We Love About This Fish
• Classic Angelicus Pattern: Bright white spots scattered across a dark body create a striking, high-contrast appearance.
• Collector Favorite: One of the most recognizable spotted Hypancistrus L-number plecos.
• Manageable Size: Smaller than many pleco species, making it suitable for structured community aquariums.
• Cave-Dwelling Behavior: Enjoys rock caves and driftwood structures where it can rest during the day.

The L004 Angelicus Pleco originates from Brazilian river systems within the Amazon basin, where it inhabits clear or slightly tannin-stained waters flowing over rocky substrates. These environments often contain submerged wood, crevices, and caves where plecos shelter during daylight hours.
Members of the Hypancistrus genus typically inhabit moderate to fast-flowing water with high oxygen levels, and they are often found among rocks and root structures where they forage for small invertebrates and organic matter.
Plants are best used to soften the aquascape and create shaded areas rather than dominate the layout.
Hardy plants that attach to wood or rock work especially well in pleco aquariums.
• Anubias species – Foreground to midground. Extremely durable plants that attach easily to wood and tolerate shaded environments.
• Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) – Midground to background. A hardy epiphyte that grows attached to driftwood or stone.
• Bucephalandra species – Foreground to midground. Naturally grows on rocks in flowing water and fits well in pleco aquascapes.
• Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri) – Foreground to midground. Encourages the growth of biofilm and microfauna, which contribute to a balanced aquarium ecosystem.
Other suitable plants may include Cryptocoryne species, which can be planted around rock structures to soften the aquascape.
Hardscape
Hardscape is the most important feature in a Hypancistrus aquarium.
Recommended materials include:
• Stacked rock formations to create natural caves
• Pleco caves or ceramic spawning caves
• Driftwood such as Malaysian driftwood or spider wood
• River stones or slate
Providing multiple caves and shaded areas helps reduce territorial behavior and allows plecos to establish preferred hiding spaces.
Botanicals
Natural botanicals help recreate the subtle chemistry of many Amazonian habitats. As they slowly break down, they release tannins and humic substances while encouraging the growth of biofilm, microbial life, and microfauna.
Aquatic Arts offers a curated selection of Aquatic Arts-branded botanicals, including:
• Aquatic Arts Indian Almond Leaves
• Aquatic Arts Catappa Bark
• Aquatic Arts Alder Cones
• Aquatic Arts Botanical Combo Pack
Aquascaping Tip
Think of the aquarium as a rocky river environment, where caves, driftwood, and shaded areas create a network of hiding places. As the aquarium matures, these surfaces develop biofilm and microfauna, helping maintain a stable and natural ecosystem.
L004 Angelicus Plecos are omnivores that lean toward a protein-rich diet. In nature they feed on small invertebrates and organic matter found among rocks and submerged structures.
Staple foods may include:
• Aquatic Arts Sinking Pellets, which are ideal for bottom-dwelling fish
• Aquatic Arts Algae Wafers as a supplemental plant-based food
Supplemental foods can include:
• Frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia
• Live foods such as micro worms, which are excellent for juvenile plecos and smaller specimens
While driftwood is not required as a food source for this species, it provides important structure and surfaces where biofilm and microfauna develop.
Feeding during evening hours is often most effective, as plecos become more active after lights dim.
The L004 Angelicus Pleco is generally peaceful and compatible with many community fish.
Suitable tank mates may include:
• Peaceful tetras and rasboras
• Corydoras catfish
• Small to medium community fish
• Dwarf cichlids
Avoid aggressive bottom dwellers or multiple territorial plecos unless the aquarium is large and well structured.
This species is generally shrimp safe with adult shrimp, though very small shrimp or shrimp fry may occasionally be eaten.
Dense plant growth and hardscape provide important refuge areas for shrimp colonies.
Like many Hypancistrus species, the L004 Angelicus Pleco is a cave spawner. Males guard eggs inside a cave after spawning, fanning them to maintain oxygen flow and prevent fungal growth.
Providing multiple pleco caves and maintaining stable water conditions can encourage breeding in well-established aquariums.
How big does the L004 Angelicus Pleco get?
Adults typically reach 4 to 5 inches in length.
Are L004 plecos good for community aquariums?
Yes. They are generally peaceful and compatible with many non-aggressive fish.
Do L004 plecos eat wood?
No. Unlike some pleco species, Hypancistrus plecos do not require wood in their diet, though driftwood provides important structure.
What do L004 plecos eat?
They accept sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen foods, and live foods such as micro worms.
Do L004 plecos need caves?
Yes. Providing caves or crevices is important because Hypancistrus species naturally shelter in tight spaces.

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
Shipping Rate
Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
