The Hercules Snail (Brotia herculea) is a large, impressive freshwater snail valued for its size, durability, and steady grazing behavior. Known for its elongated, sculpted shell and strong presence in the aquarium, this species contributes to biofilm control and detritus processing in established systems.

Collected specimens originate from natural river systems and are carefully acclimated prior to sale. Once settled, Hercules Snails adapt well to stable aquariums with appropriate mineral content and structure.

Due to its adult size and active grazing habits, the Hercules Snail is best suited for medium to large freshwater aquariums where its natural behavior and growth can be supported long-term.

Hercules Snails originate from Southeast Asian river systems, where they inhabit flowing waters with rocky substrates, submerged wood, and mineral-rich conditions. These environments typically provide steady current, natural grazing surfaces, and moderate to high mineral content, which support shell development and long-term health.

Hercules Snails (Brotia herculea) perform best in aquariums that replicate the structured, mineral-rich river environments they originate from. Stable hardscape and adequate surface area are essential for natural grazing behavior and long-term shell health.

Hardscape: Driftwood, river stone, and textured rock increase usable surface area for biofilm and algae growth, supporting the Hercules Snail’s natural grazing patterns. Secure structure is important, as this species is strong and active along hard surfaces.

Plants & Botanicals: Live aquatic plants help maintain water stability and nutrient balance. Leaf litter and botanicals may be incorporated but should not accumulate excessive debris that could impact water quality.

Substrate: Sand or smooth gravel is recommended to prevent damage to the snail’s muscular foot and shell edge. Avoid sharp or abrasive substrates.

Water Safety: Hercules Snails are sensitive to copper-based medications and certain chemical treatments. Only use products confirmed safe for freshwater invertebrates.

Hercules Snails (Brotia herculea) are omnivorous freshwater snails that graze continuously on biofilm, algae, and organic detritus within the aquarium. In established freshwater systems, naturally occurring biofilm provides an important baseline food source.

Because Hercules Snails grow large and develop substantial shell mass, supplemental feeding is recommended. Offer high-quality sinking invertebrate foods, algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach, and occasional protein-based foods to support steady growth and body condition.

Unlike strictly algae-eating snails, Hercules Snails benefit from a varied diet that includes both plant-based and protein components.

Adequate mineral availability, particularly calcium and dissolved hardness, is important for maintaining shell strength and preventing shell erosion. In softer water aquariums, mineral supplementation may be necessary to support proper shell development.

Consistent feeding and stable water parameters contribute significantly to the long-term health and lifespan of Brotia herculea in freshwater aquariums.

Hercules Snails (Brotia herculea) are peaceful freshwater invertebrates and can be housed with non-aggressive community fish in properly sized aquariums. They are well suited for larger planted tanks and river-style community setups where tank mates do not exhibit territorial or predatory behavior.

Avoid housing Hercules Snails with known snail-eating fish such as puffers, certain loaches, or other predatory bottom-dwelling species. While adult Hercules Snails are larger and more robust than many freshwater snails, they may still be harassed or stressed by aggressive tank mates.

When selecting compatible species, consider temperament, tank size, and feeding competition. Peaceful community fish that do not nip, peck, or actively hunt invertebrates are the most suitable companions for Brotia herculea.

Hercules Snails (Brotia herculea) are generally considered shrimp safe and do not prey on freshwater shrimp. They coexist well with Neocaridina and Caridina species in stable, established aquariums.

Because Hercules Snails are active grazers and grow to a substantial size, minor food competition may occur in smaller tanks or heavily stocked systems. Ensuring adequate feeding and sufficient tank space helps reduce competition, particularly in shrimp-focused aquariums.

Hercules Snails do not target shrimplets, but stable water parameters and proper feeding practices are important when keeping multiple invertebrate species together.

Hercules Snails (Brotia herculea) are livebearing freshwater snails, meaning they do not lay visible egg clutches like many other aquarium snails. Instead, females give birth to fully formed juvenile snails.

Reproduction in captivity is possible but not guaranteed. Breeding success depends on stable water parameters, adequate mineral availability, proper diet, and overall aquarium maturity. Unlike species that reproduce rapidly, Brotia herculea does not typically overpopulate aquariums.

Because Hercules Snails produce live young, population growth tends to be gradual rather than explosive. Stable environmental conditions are essential for successful reproduction and juvenile survival.

Are Hercules Snails good for algae control in freshwater aquariums?

Hercules Snails (Brotia herculea) help control biofilm and light algae growth in freshwater aquariums. They are not a cure for severe algae problems but contribute to overall ecosystem balance.

Do Hercules Snails lay eggs or are they livebearers?

Hercules Snails are livebearing freshwater snails. They give birth to fully formed juvenile snails rather than laying egg clutches.

How big does Brotia herculea get?

Brotia herculea typically grows to 3 to 4+ inches in length. Their large adult size makes them better suited for medium to large aquariums.

Are Hercules Snails safe with shrimp?

Hercules Snails are generally considered shrimp safe. They do not prey on Neocaridina or Caridina shrimp but may compete for food in smaller tanks.

What do Hercules Snails eat in captivity?

Hercules Snails eat biofilm, algae, detritus, vegetable-based sinking foods, and occasional protein-based foods. A varied diet supports healthy growth and shell development.

Do Hercules Snails need calcium for shell health?

Yes. Hercules Snails require adequate mineral content, including calcium, to maintain strong shell structure and prevent shell erosion.

Can Hercules Snails live in planted tanks?

Hercules Snails can live in planted aquariums and do not consume healthy live plants. They primarily graze on algae and biofilm growing on hard surfaces.

Are Hercules Snails sensitive to copper medications?

Yes. Like most freshwater invertebrates, Hercules Snails are sensitive to copper-based medications and certain chemical treatments.

How long do Hercules Snails live in an aquarium?

With stable water parameters and proper feeding, Hercules Snails can live several years in freshwater aquariums.

Do Hercules Snails reproduce quickly in captivity?

Hercules Snails do not reproduce rapidly. As livebearers, population growth tends to be gradual rather than excessive.

For the safety of our animals, we only ship live fish, crabs, and select other inverts exclusively via UPS 1 Day Air.  If your order contains this item, you will only see UPS 1 Day Air as a shipping option during checkout. If other items are in your cart that can ship with  2 day or standard shipping options the only shipping method you can still select is UPS 1 Day Air.

UPS 1 Day is a description of the duration of time a shipment will spend in transit once it has been shipped. This does not guarantee the package will be shipped the same or next day from which the order was placed.

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
