The Golden Dojo Loach, also known as the Golden Weather Loach, is a vibrant yellow-orange variant of the classic Dojo Loach. With its curious behavior and peaceful personality, it’s a perfect addition to freshwater aquariums and outdoor ponds alike. These loaches are active, friendly, and full of personality—often interacting with their keepers and tankmates. These specimens are tank-raised and currently 3+ inches in size.

What We Love About This Fish:

Bright Golden Coloration: Adds bold color to the bottom level of tanks or ponds
Personality Plus: Known to be social, playful, and sometimes even hand-fed
Hardy Cold-Water Option: Thrives in a wide range of conditions, ideal for outdoor setups
Cleans as it Forages: Helps reduce uneaten food and waste along the substrate

Natural Habitat:

Originally from East Asia, Dojo Loaches are found in slow-moving rivers, swamps, and rice paddies. This golden variety has been selectively bred for its brilliant color while maintaining the species' natural hardiness and adaptability.

Aquascaping:

Plants: Java Fern, Water Sprite, Anubias, Hornwort
Hardscape: Smooth stones, sandy substrate for burrowing, and driftwood hideouts
Botanicals: Add Indian Almond Leaves or alder cones to create soft cover and healthy biofilm

Diet and Feeding:

Golden Dojo Loaches are omnivorous and very active eaters. They will thrive on a mix of sinking pellets, Repashy gel food, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach.

Tank Mates and Compatibility:

Peaceful and social, they’re compatible with similarly peaceful fish like danios, goldfish, white clouds, barbs, rasboras, and other cool or temperate water species. Best kept in small groups.

Not Shrimp Safe:

May coexist with larger shrimp species, though small shrimp fry may be at risk. Provide hiding spots for shrimp colonies.

Outdoor Water Feature & Pond Care:

The Golden Dojo Loach thrives in well-maintained outdoor ponds and water gardens, especially those with cool or temperate climates. They handle seasonal changes well and often become more active before rainstorms—earning their nickname "Weather Loach." Ensure the pond has gentle flow, fine substrate, and adequate shade or hiding places. Not recommended for outdoor use in areas with freezing winters unless overwintering indoors.

Breeding:

Rarely bred in home aquaria; requires seasonal temperature cycling. Egg scattering may occur in heavily planted environments with minimal flow.

Recommended Tank Parameters:

Temperature: 50° - 77°F (10° - 25°C)
pH: 6.5 - 8.0
KH: 4 - 12 dKH
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons (larger if keeping in groups or in ponds)

Care Guidelines:

Diet: Omnivorous scavenger, eats a wide variety of foods
Social Behavior: Best kept in groups of 3 or more for social enrichment
Origin: Tank-Raised
Average Adult Size: 6 – 8 inches (can exceed 10 inches with age and space)
Average Purchase Size: 3+ inches

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
