The Diamond Tetra (Moenkhausia pittieri) is a stunning South American tetra known for the shimmering, reflective scales that give the fish its jewel-like appearance. When mature and kept in a well-maintained aquarium, the body glitters with flashes of silver, green, and violet, especially under aquarium lighting. Males often develop extended fins and display more intense iridescence as they mature.

Tank-bred specimens are hardy and adaptable, making the Diamond Tetra an excellent choice for planted community aquariums. When kept in a proper group, they form active shoals that bring movement and sparkle to the midwater of the aquarium.

The Diamond Tetra originates from Lake Valencia and surrounding waterways in Venezuela, where it inhabits slow-moving streams and vegetated margins. These environments often contain submerged plants, driftwood, and leaf litter that tint the water with tannins.

The natural habitat tends to have soft to moderately hard water with gentle flow, and fish are typically found swimming in groups in the midwater areas where they forage for small insects, crustaceans, and plant material.

Creating a thoughtfully structured aquarium helps Diamond Tetras feel secure and display their best coloration.

Plants

Hardy aquatic plants provide shelter, improve water quality, and help reduce stress in aquarium fish. The following plants are beginner-friendly species that grow well in most freshwater aquariums, but other plants that match the fish’s natural habitat can also be excellent additions.

Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus)Midground to background. Extremely hardy and beginner friendly. Attaches easily to driftwood or stone.

Anubias speciesForeground to midground. Slow growing and durable plants that thrive when attached to hardscape.

VallisneriaBackground. Tall ribbon-like leaves create natural vertical cover that resembles aquatic grasses.

Amazon Sword (Echinodorus species)Midground to background. Broad leaves provide structure and shelter within planted aquariums.

Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri)Foreground to midground. Encourages biofilm growth and microfauna, creating natural grazing surfaces.

Floating Plants (Frogbit or Salvinia)Surface. Provide shade and diffuse lighting, which often helps tetras display richer coloration.

Other suitable plants may include Cryptocoryne, Water Sprite, Hornwort, or Bucephalandra depending on the aquascape.

Hardscape

Natural hardscape helps replicate the calm river margins where this species originates.

Recommended materials include:

• Driftwood such as Malaysian driftwood or spider wood

• Smooth river stones

• Root structures or branch wood

Botanicals

Natural botanicals help recreate the subtle chemistry and visual character of South American habitats. As they slowly break down, they release tannins and humic substances while encouraging the growth of biofilm, microbial life, and microfauna that support a balanced aquarium ecosystem.

Aquatic Arts offers a curated selection of Aquatic Arts-branded botanicals, including:

• Aquatic Arts Indian Almond Leaves

• Aquatic Arts Catappa Bark

• Aquatic Arts Alder Cones

• Aquatic Arts Botanical Combo Pack

Aquascaping Tip

Combining live plants, natural driftwood, and botanicals helps create a stable environment for Diamond Tetras. As the aquarium matures, these materials encourage the development of biofilm, microbial life, and microfauna, supporting a healthy and balanced ecosystem.

Diamond Tetras are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet of high-quality prepared foods and occasional live or frozen foods. Offering a balanced feeding routine helps maintain strong coloration, healthy growth, and active schooling behavior.

Staple foods may include:

Community pellets or micro pellets for everyday feeding

Supplemental foods can be offered periodically to encourage natural feeding behavior and improve conditioning:

• Frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia

• Live foods such as micro worms, which are excellent for smaller community fish and nano species

Feed small portions once or twice daily, offering only what the fish will consume within a few minutes to maintain excellent water quality.

Diamond Tetras are peaceful schooling fish that thrive in community aquariums.

Suitable tank mates may include:

• Other peaceful tetras

• Rasboras and danios

• Corydoras catfish

• Peaceful dwarf cichlids

• Small rainbowfish

Avoid housing them with aggressive or significantly larger fish that may bully them.

Keeping groups of at least 6–8 individuals helps reduce stress and encourages natural schooling behavior.

Diamond Tetras are generally considered shrimp safe with adult shrimp, but very small shrimp or newly hatched shrimp may occasionally be eaten.

Dense plant growth, moss, and hardscape provide important refuge areas for shrimp colonies.

Diamond Tetras are egg scatterers that can be bred in captivity with the right conditions. Spawning typically occurs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops.

Conditioning fish with high-quality foods such as frozen or live foods often improves spawning success. Eggs usually hatch within 24–36 hours, and the fry can be raised on very small foods such as infusoria and powdered fry foods.

How big do Diamond Tetras get?

Diamond Tetras typically reach about 2 to 2.5 inches in length as adults.

How many Diamond Tetras should be kept together?

A group of at least 6–8 fish is recommended for natural schooling behavior.

Are Diamond Tetras good for community aquariums?

Yes. They are peaceful fish that do well in planted community tanks with other calm species.

What do Diamond Tetras eat?

They accept community pellets, micro pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as micro worms.

Are Diamond Tetras beginner friendly?

Yes. Tank-bred specimens are hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for beginner aquarists with a properly maintained aquarium.

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
