The Asian Bumblebee Catfish is a bold and beautifully patterned nocturnal catfish known for its striking yellow-and-black banding and secretive personality. Native to Southeast Asia, this species has become a favorite among aquarists who appreciate unusual bottom dwellers with strong feeding responses and fascinating nighttime behavior. Unlike many smaller “bumblebee catfish” species commonly seen in the hobby, the Asian Bumblebee Catfish grows substantially larger and develops into a confident, chunky predator that thrives in well-structured aquariums with driftwood, caves, and dimly lit hiding areas.
While generally peaceful toward similarly sized fish, this species is opportunistic and will consume tank mates small enough to fit in its mouth. Once established, however, it becomes an engaging wet pet that eagerly emerges during feeding time and adapts well to aquarium life.
What We Love About This Fish:
• Classic Bumblebee Patterning: Bold yellow and black bands create one of the most recognizable catfish appearances in the hobby.
• Nocturnal Personality: Most active during evening hours, making it an exciting fish for nighttime viewing.
• Excellent Predator for Larger Community Tanks: Can coexist well with robust, similarly sized tank mates.
• Hardy and Adaptable: Adjusts well to aquarium life when provided stable water quality and plenty of cover.

The Asian Bumblebee Catfish originates from river systems and tributaries throughout Thailand and surrounding regions of Southeast Asia, including portions of the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins. In nature, these catfish inhabit slow to moderately flowing waterways filled with submerged roots, driftwood tangles, leaf litter, and shaded overhangs. During daylight hours they remain hidden beneath structure and emerge after dark to forage for insects, crustaceans, worms, and small fish.
Aquascaping
Design the aquarium like a shadowy Southeast Asian stream with layered driftwood, root tangles, smooth river stones, and quiet hiding spaces woven throughout the hardscape. The Asian Bumblebee Catfish spends much of the day tucked beneath cover, so caves, overhangs, and dark retreats are essential to helping this species feel secure and display more natural behavior.
Use hardy plants that can tolerate lower lighting and calmer areas of the aquarium such as Java Fern, Anubias, Bucephalandra, Cryptocoryne, and floating plants that soften bright overhead light. A sandy or fine gravel substrate works best, especially around feeding areas where this catfish will actively forage after dark.
To complete the natural riverbank feel, scatter botanicals like Indian Almond Leaves, alder cones, and seed pods throughout the aquarium. These additions create a more organic environment while encouraging microfauna activity and adding texture to the aquascape without overwhelming the fish’s bold striped pattern.
Asian Bumblebee Catfish are carnivorous scavengers that thrive on a varied, protein-rich diet. High-quality sinking carnivore pellets should form the staple diet, supplemented regularly with frozen bloodworms, mysis shrimp, chopped earthworms, krill, blackworms, and other meaty foods. Feeding is best performed during the evening or after lights-out when the fish becomes more active.
This species is best kept with medium to larger peaceful fish that will not fit into its mouth. Good tank mates can include larger tetras, rainbowfish, peaceful cichlids, barbs, and other robust community fish. Very small nano fish should be avoided, as they may eventually be viewed as prey.
Although not highly aggressive, Asian Bumblebee Catfish can become territorial toward other bottom-dwelling fish, especially in cramped aquariums. Providing caves, broken sight lines, and ample territory helps minimize disputes.
Shrimp Safe
No. Adult shrimp, dwarf crayfish, and other small invertebrates are likely to be preyed upon by this species, especially during nighttime feeding activity.
Breeding
Captive breeding of the Asian Bumblebee Catfish remains extremely rare in the aquarium hobby. Most specimens available in the trade are wild collected or commercially farmed overseas. Sexual dimorphism is minimal and difficult to identify in juveniles.
FAQ
Is the Asian Bumblebee Catfish the same as the South American Bumblebee Catfish?
No. The Asian Bumblebee Catfish (Pseudomystus siamensis) grows significantly larger and is generally more predatory than the smaller South American Bumblebee Catfish species commonly sold in the hobby.
How large does the Asian Bumblebee Catfish get?
Most specimens reach approximately 5 to 6 inches in captivity with proper care and feeding.
Are Asian Bumblebee Catfish aggressive?
They are not typically aggressive toward similarly sized fish, but they are opportunistic predators and may consume smaller tank mates.
Can this fish live in a community aquarium?
Yes, when housed with appropriately sized fish and provided adequate hiding spaces.
Are they active during the day?
Most activity occurs at night or during low-light conditions. During the day they often remain hidden inside caves or beneath driftwood.
What is the best substrate for this species?
Fine sand or smooth gravel is recommended to protect the catfish’s barbels and underside.
Do Asian Bumblebee Catfish need driftwood or caves?
Absolutely. This species requires secure hiding places to feel comfortable and display natural behavior.
What foods do they prefer?
They prefer protein-rich foods including sinking carnivore pellets, worms, frozen foods, and crustacean-based diets.
Can multiple Asian Bumblebee Catfish be kept together?
It is possible in very large aquariums with numerous hiding spots, though territorial behavior may occur between bottom dwellers.
Are Asian Bumblebee Catfish good for planted aquariums?
Yes. They generally ignore plants and do very well in heavily aquascaped aquariums with driftwood, botanicals, and shaded areas.

Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
