The Black Molly: An Elegant, Hardy Fish for Every Aquarium
The Black Molly (Poecilia latipinna) is a striking and adaptable freshwater fish known for its velvety black coloration and peaceful nature. Unlike other common livebearers, this particular variety is locally bred to ensure healthy and well-adjusted fish that will thrive in your tank. With their peaceful temperament, Black Mollies are ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists, making them a versatile addition to any aquarium setup.
What We Love About This Fish:
- Jet-Black Appearance: Their rich, solid black color adds elegance to any aquascape.
- Locally Bred: Sustainably raised, ensuring they are well-acclimated to tank conditions.
- Hardy and Adaptable: Tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, even thriving in brackish environments.
- Peaceful Community Member: Suitable for tanks with other non-aggressive species.
Natural Habitat and Behavior:
Native to the brackish waters of Central and South America, Black Mollies are highly adaptable and can thrive in both freshwater and slightly brackish environments. These fish love swimming in the middle to upper levels of the tank and do well in groups of three or more, creating an active and engaging display in community setups.
Mollies are livebearers, meaning they give birth to free-swimming fry. Under optimal conditions, breeding can occur naturally, providing a rewarding experience for aquarists looking to raise their own fish.
Diet and Feeding:
As omnivores, Black Mollies require a varied diet to maintain their health and vibrant color. They will readily accept high-quality flakes, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini. For the occasional treat, frozen or live foods such as daphnia or brine shrimp are ideal for boosting their nutrition and enhancing their coloration.
Tank Mates and Compatibility:
Black Mollies are peaceful fish, making them excellent candidates for community tanks. They coexist well with species such as Platies, Swordtails, Tetras, and peaceful Gouramis. Avoid housing them with aggressive or fin-nipping fish, as this can cause unnecessary stress.

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
Shipping Rate
Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
