The Black Kuhli Loach is one of the most unique bottom dwellers in the freshwater aquarium hobby, prized for its sleek eel-like body, peaceful demeanor, and rich velvet-black coloration. Unlike the more commonly available striped Kuhli varieties, this species offers a bold, uniform dark appearance that stands out beautifully against plants, driftwood, and light-colored substrate. Our tank bred specimens are well adapted to aquarium life and make an excellent addition to peaceful community aquariums seeking something truly different.

The original Black Kuhli Loach was first documented in Southeast Asia, where Pangio oblonga inhabits slow-moving forest streams, swamp margins, and leaf-litter-rich waterways. These habitats are typically shaded by dense vegetation and filled with soft substrate, submerged roots, driftwood, and decomposing botanicals.

Black Kuhli Loaches are at their best when the aquarium floor feels like a hidden forest stream. Start with a soft sand substrate that allows them to burrow, sift, and glide naturally through the bottom of the aquarium without damaging their delicate bodies.

Build the scape with twisting driftwood, smooth stones, root structures, and shaded crevices to create a labyrinth of hiding places they can weave through throughout the day. Dense plantings around the hardscape help break sight lines and give the aquarium a more secure, layered appearance.

To truly bring out their natural behavior, scatter Aquatic Arts botanicals such as Indian Almond Leaves, alder cones, and seed pods across open areas of the substrate. Over time, these create a leaf-litter zone that mimics the tannin-rich streambeds this species evolved in, encouraging exploration, foraging, and more confident behavior.

When designed properly, a Black Kuhli Loach aquarium should feel less like a display tank and more like a submerged jungle floor in motion.

Black Kuhli Loaches are opportunistic omnivores that readily accept a variety of sinking prepared foods and frozen offerings. Their diet should focus on quality sinking foods supplemented with protein-rich treats several times per week.

Ideal foods include sinking community pellets, algae wafers, frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp, blackworms, and live foods when available. Feeding during the evening often produces the best response, as this species becomes more active during lower light periods.

This species is ideal for peaceful community aquariums and pairs well with tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, gouramis, rainbowfish, and other calm community fish. They should not be housed with aggressive cichlids, large predatory fish, or highly territorial bottom dwellers.

Because they are shy by nature, they appreciate calm tank mates that will not constantly outcompete them for food.

Adult shrimp are generally safe with Black Kuhli Loaches, especially in planted aquariums with ample hiding spaces. However, very small shrimp fry may be eaten opportunistically if encountered.

Dense mosses, biofilm zones, and complex hardscape can help improve fry survival in mixed-species aquariums.

Breeding Black Kuhli Loaches in captivity is uncommon but possible in mature, heavily planted aquariums. They are egg scatterers and typically spawn among fine-leaved plants or mosses when kept in ideal conditions with pristine water quality and a well-conditioned group.

Are Black Kuhli Loaches true Kuhli Loaches?

Yes, they are a true Pangio species closely related to the striped Kuhli Loach.

Do they need to be kept in groups?

Yes. Groups of five or more help them feel secure and encourage more natural activity.

Do they burrow into substrate?

Yes, they commonly bury themselves partially or fully in sand.

Can they live with shrimp?

Yes with adult shrimp, though shrimp fry may be at risk.

Will they eat snails?

No, they generally ignore snails.

Are they nocturnal?

They are most active during dawn, dusk, and evening hours.

Can they jump out of the tank?

Yes, tight-fitting lids are strongly recommended.

Do they like botanicals?

Yes, they thrive in leaf litter and blackwater-style environments.

Why choose tank bred over wild caught?

Tank bred specimens are typically hardier, more adaptable, and reduce pressure on wild populations.

How long do they live?

With proper care, 8–10 years is common.

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
