The Reckless x Ulysses Medaka Ricefish is a striking, locally bred hybrid that combines the bold coloration of the Reckless strain with the shimmering iridescence of the Ulysses line. Hardy, peaceful, and endlessly active, these ricefish thrive in a wide variety of aquarium setups and bring constant motion and beauty to the upper levels of the tank. Their adaptability and vibrant appearance make them ideal for both novice and experienced fishkeepers.

What We Love About This Fish:

• Unique Hybrid Coloration – A blend of bold tones and subtle iridescence for a one-of-a-kind look.
Hardy and Adaptable – Thrives in a range of water conditions, including outdoor tubs in warm seasons.
Peaceful Nature – Perfect for community aquariums with other gentle species.
Active Swimmers – Bring energy and life to the tank’s surface and mid-water areas.

Natural Habitat:

While domesticated, medaka ricefish originate from slow-moving streams, ponds, and rice paddies in East Asia. They prefer calm, shallow waters with aquatic vegetation and open swimming space.

Aquascaping:

• Plants: Floating plants like Amazon Frogbit, Water Spangles, or Red Root Floaters to diffuse light and create a natural canopy.
Hardscape: Smooth river stones, driftwood branches, and fine gravel or sand substrate.
Botanicals: Indian Almond Leaves or alder cones to provide tannins and promote biofilm growth.

Diet and Feeding:

Omnivorous and undemanding, they readily accept high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and small live or frozen foods like daphnia, baby brine shrimp, or cyclops. A varied diet enhances coloration and overall health.

Tank Mates and Compatibility:

Peaceful and non-aggressive, making them excellent companions for small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and shrimp. Avoid large or aggressive fish that may nip fins or outcompete them for food.

Shrimp Safe:

Yes, adult ricefish are safe with most shrimp species. Very small shrimp fry may be eaten, so provide plenty of hiding spaces for breeding colonies.

Breeding:

Medaka ricefish are egg scatterers and often carry adhesive eggs along their vent area before depositing them on plants or fine-leaved spawning mops. Breeding is easy in well-maintained tanks, and fry are hardy with appropriate food like infusoria or powdered fry food.

Recommended Tank Parameters:

• Temperature: 64° – 78° F (18° – 26° C)
pH: 6.5 – 8.0
KH: 2 – 12 dKH
Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons

Care Guidelines:

• Diet: Omnivorous; accepts quality dry, live, and frozen foods.
Social Behavior: Peaceful, best in groups of 6 or more.
Origin: Locally bred in the USA.
Average Adult Size: 1.5 – 2 inches (3.8 – 5 cm)
Average Purchase Size: 1 – 1.25 inches (2.5 – 3.2 cm)

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
