The Blue Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus), also known as the Three-Spot Gourami or Opaline Gourami, is a popular and hardy species known for its striking blue coloration and peaceful nature. This tank-bred variant is an excellent addition to any freshwater community aquarium. Blue Gouramis are known for their adaptability and ease of care, making them ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Their unique labyrinth organ allows them to breathe air from the water’s surface, making them tolerant of a wide range of water conditions and even low-oxygen environments.
What We Love About This Fish:
- Beautiful Blue Coloration: Known for its iridescent blue hue, often enhanced in a well-maintained aquarium.
- Hardy and Adaptable: Thrives in a variety of water conditions, making it ideal for beginners.
- Labyrinth Fish: Has a labyrinth organ that allows it to breathe air directly from the surface.
- Peaceful: A calm and serene fish that fits well in community tanks.
Natural Habitat and Behavior:
In the wild, the Blue Gourami inhabits slow-moving waters such as swamps, rivers, and rice paddies across Southeast Asia, including countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. These waters are often low in oxygen, which is why the labyrinth organ plays a critical role in their survival. The labyrinth organ allows them to breathe air directly from the surface, meaning they are capable of living in less oxygenated water than many other species.
In the aquarium, Blue Gouramis can often be seen rising to the surface to take a gulp of air, especially in tanks with lower oxygen levels or where water movement is minimal. They are peaceful, but males may become territorial during breeding, so it’s important to provide plenty of hiding spots in the tank.
Aquascaping, Hardscaping, and Plants:
The Blue Gourami thrives in a well-planted aquarium with lots of cover from plants, driftwood, and decorations. Floating plants are especially appreciated, as they provide cover and mimic the natural environment where this fish prefers to linger near the water's surface. Using plants like Anubias, Java Fern, or Amazon Sword alongside floating plants such as Salvinia or Water Lettuce helps create a natural, serene habitat for the gourami. Soft, fine substrate like sand or smooth gravel is recommended to avoid injury.
Providing plenty of hiding spots with driftwood, rocks, and plants also helps reduce stress and territorial behavior, especially in a larger community tank.
Diet and Feeding:
The Blue Gourami is an omnivore that enjoys a varied diet. It will readily accept high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. For optimal health and vibrant coloration, a varied diet that includes both protein-rich foods and plant-based meals like spirulina flakes is recommended. They may also graze on algae in the tank, contributing to a cleaner aquarium.
Labyrinth Fish:
The Blue Gourami is part of a special group of fish known as labyrinth fishes. These fish possess a labyrinth organ, which allows them to breathe atmospheric air by rising to the surface of the water. This adaptation is particularly useful in low-oxygen environments, such as shallow or slow-moving waters. In an aquarium, you'll often see your Blue Gourami come to the surface to gulp air, which is perfectly normal behavior for labyrinth fishes.
This ability makes them more tolerant of varying water conditions, but it’s still important to maintain good water quality in the tank. While they can survive in lower-oxygen environments, they thrive in well-oxygenated water and appreciate gentle water flow.
Tank Mates and Compatibility:
The Blue Gourami is generally peaceful but can display mild territorial tendencies, especially toward other labyrinth fish. It is best housed with similarly sized, peaceful species such as tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and non-aggressive loaches. Avoid housing them with aggressive or fin-nipping species, as their flowing fins can become targets. Providing adequate space and hiding spots will minimize any territorial behavior.

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
