The Angel Licorice Gourami is a stunning and rare species of dwarf labyrinth fish known for its iridescent shimmer and intricate fin patterns. This species is one of the more vividly marked Parosphromenus and remains relatively unknown in the aquarium trade. Its shimmering turquoise and deep indigo hues, combined with contrasting black stripes and delicate fins, make it a hidden gem for experienced aquarists and nano tank enthusiasts.
What We Love About This Fish:
• Unique, Rare Species: Extremely limited availability in the hobby.
• Breathtaking Coloration: Deep metallic blues, blacks, and iridescent green highlights.
• Peaceful and Fascinating: Ideal for blackwater nano biotopes and species-only tanks.
• Bubble-Nest Breeder: Engaging courtship and breeding behavior in the right environment.
Natural Habitat:
The Angel Licorice Gourami hails from peat swamp forests and slow-moving blackwater streams in West Kalimantan, Borneo. These habitats are shaded, rich in leaf litter and tannins, and extremely low in minerals, creating very soft, acidic water conditions.
Aquascaping:
• Plants: Floaters like Salvinia and Frogbit for dim lighting; Java Fern and Cryptocoryne for cover.
• Hardscape: Malaysian driftwood, catappa bark, and smooth river stones for natural decor.
• Botanicals: Ideal candidates include Indian Almond Leaves, Casuarina pods, and alder cones to help maintain acidity and promote biofilm.
Diet and Feeding:
Angel Licorice Gouramis are micro-predators. In the aquarium, they thrive on live and frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, microworms, and blackworms. Some individuals may accept high-quality micro pellets over time, but live food is strongly recommended to maintain coloration and health.
Tank Mates and Compatibility:
This species is best kept in a peaceful, species-only tank or alongside other ultra-peaceful, softwater-dwelling microfish. Avoid aggressive or boisterous tank mates.
Shrimp Safe:
May be safe with adult dwarf shrimp, but not recommended for shrimp colonies or breeding setups. Shrimp fry will likely be eaten.
Breeding:
Parosphromenus anjunganensis is a cave-spawning bubble-nest builder. Males court females with dramatic fin displays. Once spawning occurs, the male tends to the eggs in a small crevice or leaf shelter. Extremely soft, acidic water and leaf litter are required to encourage breeding.
Recommended Tank Parameters:
• Temperature: 75° - 80° F (24° - 27° C)
• pH: 4.0 - 6.0
• KH: 0 - 2 dKH
• Minimum Tank Size: 5 gallons (ideal in pairs or trios)
Care Guidelines:
• Diet: Carnivorous micro-predator. Prefers live and frozen food.
• Social Behavior: Peaceful, best kept in pairs or trios.
• Origin: Wild-collected or specialty tank-bred (depending on availability).
• Average Adult Size: 0.8 - 1.2 inches (2 - 3 cm)
• Average Purchase Size: 0.6 - 1 inch (1.5 - 2.5 cm)
This rare and delicate beauty is a must-have for blackwater enthusiasts and nano tank keepers looking for something truly unique. Add a pair to your specialized setup and enjoy the glow of one of nature’s hidden jewels!

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
Shipping Rate
Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
