The Albino Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus 'Albino') is a rare and fascinating nano catfish with the same peaceful and social nature as its standard Pygmy Cory relatives. This unique albino variant features a soft pinkish-white body with red eyes, making it a striking addition to any small freshwater aquarium. Like all Corydoras pygmaeus, this species prefers to swim midwater in active shoals, creating an engaging display of synchronized movement.
This tank-bred variety is perfect for planted aquariums and nano setups and thrives in groups of six or more. Their gentle nature and algae-grazing habits make them an excellent choice for peaceful community tanks.
What We Love About This Fish:
- Rare Albino Variant – A unique take on the beloved Pygmy Cory with a soft pinkish-white body and red eyes.
- Active Schooling Behavior – Unlike most Corydoras, this species prefers midwater swimming in tight groups.
- Peaceful Nano Community Fish – Safe with small tank mates, including shrimp and snails.
- Great for Planted Tanks – Their small size and gentle nature make them ideal for aquascapes.
Natural Habitat:
The Pygmy Corydoras species originates from slow-moving, heavily planted streams and tributaries in South America, particularly in the Madeira and Nanay River basins. They naturally inhabit areas with fine sand, leaf litter, and plenty of aquatic plants, which provide shelter and foraging opportunities.
While the Albino variant is captive-bred, it retains the same natural behaviors and habitat preferences.
Aquascaping:
- Plants: Thrives in lush, planted aquariums with species like Anubias, Java Moss, Cryptocorynes, and Dwarf Hairgrass.
- Hardscape: Prefers smooth river stones, driftwood, and fine sand substrates for safe foraging.
- Botanicals: Benefits from Indian Almond Leaves and alder cones, which provide tannins and biofilm.
Diet and Feeding:
The Albino Pygmy Corydoras is an omnivore and thrives on a balanced diet:
- Staple Diet: High-quality sinking micro pellets and small granules.
- Protein Treats: Frozen or live foods like baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and microworms.
- Vegetable Matter: Blanched zucchini, spinach, and spirulina-based foods.
To support optimal health and breeding, a varied diet with regular small feedings is recommended.
Tank Mates and Compatibility:
-
Best Tank Mates:
✅ Other peaceful nano fish such as Ember Tetras, Celestial Pearl Danios, Chili Rasboras, and Dwarf Rasboras.
✅ Shrimp-friendly and safe with Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp.
✅ Snails and other bottom-dwellers like Otocinclus and small Loaches. -
Species to Avoid:
❌ Aggressive or large fish such as Cichlids or large Barbs.
❌ Fast-moving species that may outcompete them for food.
Shrimp Safe?
✅ Yes! The Albino Pygmy Corydoras is shrimp-safe and coexists well with dwarf shrimp species. Baby shrimp (shrimplets) may be eaten if small enough, but adults are safe.
Breeding:
Breeding Albino Pygmy Corydoras follows the same process as their wild-type relatives.
- Temperature Triggers: Raising the temperature to 75-78°F and performing cool water changes simulates rainy season conditions.
- Spawning Behavior: Females lay small adhesive eggs on tank surfaces, which hatch in 3-5 days.
- Fry Care: Newly hatched fry can be fed infusoria and powdered fry food, followed by baby brine shrimp.
Breeding is easiest in a species-only setup with plenty of live plants and fine substrate.

Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
