The Panda Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma nijsseni) is one of the most striking and personality-filled dwarf cichlids available. Known for its jet-black patches set against vibrant golden-yellow and blue highlights, this compact species radiates charm and intelligence. A pair will quickly establish a territory, display fascinating courtship behavior, and interact actively with their surroundings—making them a centerpiece in any small aquarium.
At Aquatic Arts, we offer both Tank-Bred and Locally Bred (Indiana) specimens:
-
Tank-Bred: Raised and conditioned in closed aquatic systems for consistent color, size, and calm temperament. Some are bred seasonally in outdoor ponds, then conditioned indoors for stability before shipping.
-
Locally Bred (Indiana): Produced by experienced small-scale breeders in Indiana who focus on strong genetics, vibrant coloration, and healthy pair bonding.
Both variants exhibit the same beautiful patterns and personable behavior that make A. nijsseni a favorite among cichlid enthusiasts.
What We Love About This Fish:
• Beautiful panda-like black and gold coloration with iridescent blue accents
• Highly intelligent and interactive—full of personality
• Peaceful for a cichlid; excellent choice for planted community tanks
• Males develop vivid coloration and elaborate fin extensions when mature
Natural Habitat:
The wild Apistogramma nijsseni originates from the slow-moving, tannin-rich tributaries of the Ucayali River basin in Peru. These blackwater environments are shaded by dense forest canopy, lined with fallen leaves, and filled with submerged roots and leaf litter. The aquarium environment should reflect these natural conditions, emphasizing soft, acidic water and ample cover.
Aquascaping:
The Panda Dwarf Cichlid flourishes in a plush, nature-inspired aquarium that recreates the quiet, shaded backwaters of the Amazon. Every detail—from the soft substrate to the filtered golden light—should evoke a sense of calm and complexity, allowing these intelligent fish to display their full range of natural behaviors.
• Plants: Dense clusters of Cryptocoryne, Assorted Sword Plants, and Java Fern form a lush mid- to background canopy, while fine-leaved species like Myriophyllum or Water Sprite soften the layout and provide shelter for fry. Floating plants such as Frogbit or Water Lettuce help diffuse light, enhancing the intimate, dappled glow that A. nijsseni prefers.
• Hardscape: Create a sense of depth and comfort with intertwined driftwood roots, river stones, and sand pathways that lead into shaded alcoves. A soft, fine sand substrate allows for their natural sifting and foraging behavior while showcasing their subtle color shifts.
• Botanicals: Use Aquatic Arts Indian Almond Leaves, Catappa Bark, and Alder Cones to release natural tannins, enrich the water with humic compounds, and support beneficial biofilm growth. Layer these botanicals to build texture and visual warmth throughout the scape. For additional structure and spawning sites, incorporate Cholla Wood and Coconut Hut Shelters — perfect for nesting pairs and microfauna development.
When arranged thoughtfully, this environment becomes more than an aquarium — it’s a living, breathing biotope where your Panda Dwarf Cichlids will thrive, display, and even raise young in complete comfort.
Diet and Feeding:
Feeding the Panda Dwarf Cichlid is as rewarding as observing its behavior. These inquisitive fish respond eagerly to a varied diet that mirrors the abundance of their natural Amazon habitat.
A balanced feeding routine should blend both prepared and fresh options. Offer high-quality micro pellets as a daily staple, ensuring even small individuals can feed comfortably. Supplement with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to satisfy their instinct for movement and hunting. These protein-rich meals intensify their coloration and bring out their trademark golden glow.
For digestive health and balance, include occasional vegetable-based flakes or spirulina-enriched foods, which provide trace nutrients and support overall vitality. Feeding smaller amounts multiple times a day encourages natural foraging and keeps the cichlids active and engaged with their surroundings.
Tank Mates and Compatibility:
Panda Dwarf Cichlids are generally peaceful but can be territorial during breeding. They coexist well with calm species such as Tetras, Rasboras, Pencilfish, and Corydoras Catfish. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping fish. Keep a bonded pair or a single male with multiple females in a well-structured tank.
Shrimp Compatibility:
Not suitable for cohabitation with small ornamental shrimp. A. nijsseni may prey on shrimp or fry, especially during breeding. Larger Amano Shrimp can coexist if ample cover and plant density are provided.
Breeding:
A cave-spawning species, the female lays eggs on the roof of a shelter or within a secluded structure such as a coconut hut, or Breeding Cave, . After hatching, the female guards the fry while the male defends the territory. Spawning is encouraged by maintaining slightly acidic, warm water (pH 6.0–6.5; ~80°F/27°C) and offering plenty of hiding spots and botanicals.
Recommended Tank Parameters:
• Temperature: 76° - 82° F (24° - 28° C)
• pH: 6.0 - 7.2
• KH: 1 - 8 dKH
• Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons (pair)
Care Guidelines:
• Diet: Carnivorous omnivore; prefers protein-rich foods.
• Social Behavior: Peaceful but territorial during breeding.
• Origin: Tank-Bred (pond or closed system) or Locally Bred in Indiana.
• Average Adult Size: 2 – 2.5 inches (5 – 6.3 cm)
• Average Purchase Size: 1 – 1.5 inches (2.5 – 3.8 cm)
Bring home the Panda Dwarf Cichlid and enjoy one of the aquarium world’s most charismatic dwarf species. With their intelligence, color, and captivating behavior, these fish are living proof that the smallest creatures can leave the biggest impression.

What makes the Panda Dwarf Cichlid different from other Apistogramma?
Rather than standing out through bright color alone, Apistogramma nijsseni is known for its bold black markings. Strong facial patterning and dark body markings—especially in females—give it the “panda” nickname and make it instantly recognizable among Apistogramma species.
Are Panda Dwarf Cichlids aggressive?
They’re generally calm, but they can become territorial, especially during breeding. This behavior is usually focused on a small area rather than the entire tank and is typical for Apistogramma.
Can Panda Dwarf Cichlids live in a community aquarium?
Yes, when paired with peaceful, non-aggressive tank mates. They do best with small tetras, pencilfish, or other calm species that won’t compete for territory or harass them.
How many Panda Dwarf Cichlids should I keep?
A bonded pair or a small harem (one male with two females) works best. Keeping multiple males in smaller tanks can cause stress unless there is plenty of space and structure.
Do Panda Dwarf Cichlids need a heavily planted tank?
Plants are helpful, but structure matters more. Driftwood, caves, leaf litter, and shaded areas give them places to claim and feel secure, which encourages natural behavior.
Are Panda Dwarf Cichlids shrimp safe?
Adult shrimp may coexist, but shrimp fry are likely to be eaten. Panda Apistos are micropredators, so they’re better suited to tanks with established shrimp rather than breeding colonies.
What do Panda Dwarf Cichlids eat?
They thrive on a varied, protein-rich diet. High-quality pellets combined with frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia keep them in good condition.
How hardy are Panda Dwarf Cichlids?
Once acclimated, they’re fairly hardy. Stable water parameters and clean conditions are important, as they don’t respond well to sudden changes or poor water quality.
Are Panda Dwarf Cichlids good for breeding?
Yes, and they’re very interesting to observe. Females become more intensely marked and highly protective, guarding eggs and fry closely and displaying strong parental behavior.
Who are Panda Dwarf Cichlids best suited for?
They’re ideal for aquarists who enjoy natural behavior and subtle visual detail. If you appreciate fish that reward thoughtful aquascaping and observation, Panda Dwarf Cichlids are a great choice.

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
Shipping Rate
Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
