The Venus Fly Trap (Dionaea muscipula) is one of the most iconic and fascinating carnivorous plants in the world. Known for its rapid snap-trap mechanism, this unique plant captures and digests insects, making it a natural and effective way to control pests. With its striking green and red-hued traps, the Venus Fly Trap is perfect for terrariums, windowsills, or dedicated carnivorous plant setups.
Pre-potted in a 3" in plastic pot, this plant is easy to place in your home or greenhouse with minimal disturbance. Whether grown indoors with proper lighting or outdoors in the right climate, the Venus Fly Trap offers an exciting and interactive experience for plant enthusiasts of all levels.
Features We Love:
- Natural Pest Control: Captures and digests flies, gnats, and other small insects.
- Fascinating Motion Traps: Unique snap-trap leaves close within seconds when triggered.
- Easy to Grow: Low-maintenance with the right conditions—requires distilled water and bright light.
- Striking Appearance: Beautiful green foliage with red-tinged traps adds a dramatic touch to any plant collection.
Care Guidelines:
- Light: Full sun (at least 12 hours of direct light or strong artificial grow lights).
- Water: Use only distilled water, rainwater, or reverse osmosis water—never tap water. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Temperature: 70° - 85° F (21° - 29° C) during the growing season; can tolerate brief cold periods in dormancy.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity but adapts to normal indoor conditions with proper watering.
- Growth Rate: Slow to moderate; forms clumping rosettes over time.
- Dormancy: Requires a winter dormancy period with cooler temperatures (around 35° - 50° F) for 2-3 months.
Pro Tips:
- Feeding: If grown indoors, feed it live or freeze-dried insects occasionally—avoid feeding human food.
- Soil: Thrives in a nutrient-poor mix of sphagnum moss and perlite; never use regular potting soil.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years in spring using a carnivorous plant soil mix.
- Avoid Overhandling: Excessively triggering traps can exhaust the plant, so avoid touching them unless necessary.
- Winter Dormancy: If grown outdoors, allow natural seasonal changes; if indoors, gradually reduce watering and keep in a cooler location.

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
Shipping Rate
Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
