Sakura Red Fire Cherry Shrimp Bred by Aquatic Arts

These shrimp are bred at our warehouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, with true level 1 UV sterilization.

Beautiful, bright red coloration helps this little shrimp stand out sharply against any backdrop, plants, or substrate in any aquarium. Sakura Red Cherry Shrimp are the golden standard of the shrimp hobby and make the perfect shrimp for beginners and enthusiasts alike. These shrimp look great, clean your tank, and are a blast to watch! Like all dwarf shrimp, they are very active and breed quickly. A colony of these shrimp works as a very effective cleaning crew for your aquarium, cleaning up algae and waste.

These are freshwater shrimp and can live in almost any freshwater aquarium. They are very popular for planted tanks and community tanks, and many people use them in large aquariums for waste management and algae control. These shrimp are young (around 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch in length), but will grow up to be 1 inch on average as fully grown adults. Young shrimp will ship and acclimate better to your aquarium. Just be wary when adding them to a tank with fish as some fish may find these young shrimp as food.

All Red Cherry Shrimp are extremely adaptable creatures that can live in almost any freshwater aquarium. Some of the younger shrimp have not reached their full potential yet and will grow into a deep red color as long as they are comfortable in the tank.

CARE GUIDELINES:

  • Diet: Scavenger that feeds continually. Requires very little feeding in a well-established aquarium containing algae, biofilm, or decaying plant matter. In less mature aquariums, high-quality dry foods with high plant content can be fed multiple times daily. Aquatic Arts Snowflake Premium Shrimp Food and Aquatic Arts Pollen Granules Premium Shrimp Food are excellent supplements to the diet of any shrimp. Give them a try and your shrimp will thank you for the tasty treat!
  • Natural Botanicals are a great way to boost the immune system of your shrimp and they will also provide lots of essential biofilm for the shrimp to graze on.
  • Social behavior: Peaceful. A small group can continually replenish and grow its population.
  • Origin: Tank-bred, but wild populations indigenous to Taiwan
  • Average adult size: 1 - 1.5 inches (2.5 - 3.8 cm)
  • Average purchase size: 1/4 - 3/4 inch (0.64 - 1.9 cm)

Aquascaping: These shrimp thrive in heavily planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots. They add vibrant color to any aquascape and help maintain a clean environment by consuming algae and detritus.

Botanicals: Introducing botanicals such as Indian Almond Leaves, Alder Cones, and other natural materials can enhance the health of your shrimp. These botanicals provide essential biofilm and help in boosting the immune system of the shrimp.

All Aquatic Arts brand plants and animals come with a 100% live arrival guarantee, plus free email support!

What makes Sakura Red Cherry Shrimp different from standard Cherry Shrimp?

Sakura Reds are selectively bred for deeper, more consistent red coloration across the body, with less translucence than basic cherry shrimp.

Are these shrimp bred by Aquatic Arts?

Yes. These shrimp are bred in-house by Aquatic Arts and are already adapted to aquarium life and typical freshwater conditions.

How red should I expect Sakura Red Cherry Shrimp to be?

Color varies slightly, but Sakura grade shrimp generally show strong red coverage. Color improves with good diet, low stress, and stable water.

Are Sakura Red Cherry Shrimp hardy?

Yes. They’re very resilient, but like all shrimp, they do best when water parameters remain stable—especially during molts.

Are Sakura Red Cherry Shrimp good for beginners?

Absolutely. They’re one of the most beginner-friendly shrimp, as long as the tank is cycled and not subject to sudden changes.

What kind of tank setup do Sakura Red Cherry Shrimp prefer?

Planted tanks with wood, moss, rocks, and botanicals work best. These surfaces support biofilm, which is their primary food source.

Will Sakura Red Cherry Shrimp eat algae?

They graze on biofilm and soft algae constantly. They’re helpful, but not a replacement for good tank maintenance.

Will Sakura Red Cherry Shrimp breed easily?

Yes. Once settled, they reproduce readily. Stable conditions encourage consistent breeding and healthier offspring.

Will offspring keep the same red color?

Many will, but some variation is normal. Occasional lighter shrimp can appear, especially over multiple generations.

Do Sakura Red Cherry Shrimp need mineral support?

Yes. Successful molting depends on calcium and trace minerals. Without enough minerals, shrimp can struggle during molts or fail to harden properly afterward.

Shipping, Arrival & Acclimation

How are Sakura Red Cherry Shrimp shipped?

They’re packed for live arrival with insulation and temperature control as needed. Shipping methods prioritize animal health over speed.

What should I do as soon as my shrimp arrive?

Open the box promptly and inspect the shrimp while they’re still sealed in the bags. This confirms live arrival and allows quick action if needed.

Is there a live arrival guarantee?

Yes. Sakura Red Cherry Shrimp are covered by Aquatic Arts’ live arrival guarantee when delivery guidelines are followed.

How should I acclimate Sakura Red Cherry Shrimp?

Slow acclimation is key. Gradually introduce tank water to the bag water so shrimp can adjust to temperature and water chemistry differences.

Is drip acclimation recommended?

Strongly recommended. Drip acclimation reduces stress and greatly improves molting success after shipping.

Can I add the shrimp directly to the tank after acclimation?

Yes. Once acclimated, gently net the shrimp into the aquarium. Avoid adding bag water to the tank.

What should I expect during the first few days?

Some hiding is normal. Shrimp usually become more active as they settle in and begin grazing.

Is it normal if a shrimp molts shortly after arrival?

Yes—and it’s usually a good sign. Molting after shipping often means the shrimp is adjusting. Finding a clear, empty shell is normal and healthy.

Should I remove molts from the tank?

No. Leaving molts in the tank allows shrimp to reclaim calcium naturally. They’re often eaten within a day.

Should I feed shrimp right away?

You can wait a day or two. Shrimp will graze on biofilm immediately. Light feeding once they’re settled helps avoid excess waste.

What tanks are best for newly arrived Sakura Red Cherry Shrimp?

Established, fully cycled tanks with visible biofilm and stable parameters are ideal. Stability matters far more than chasing exact numbers.

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
