The Amazon Whiptail Catfish (Farlowella amazonum), also known as the Twig Catfish, is a fascinating and uniquely shaped species with an elongated body that mimics the appearance of a twig. Native to slow-moving streams and tributaries of the Amazon River Basin, this peaceful and gentle fish is an excellent addition to well-maintained community aquariums. Its slender form and natural ability to blend in with driftwood and plants make it a standout species for those who appreciate unusual and naturalistic fish.

This species thrives in mature, well-oxygenated aquariums with plenty of plant cover, driftwood, and smooth rocks. As a natural algae grazer, it requires a well-balanced diet supplemented with high-quality plant-based foods.

What We Love About This Fish:

Incredible Camouflage – Resembles a twig, blending seamlessly with driftwood and plants.
Peaceful and Docile – An excellent choice for calm community tanks.
Natural Algae Grazer – Helps keep biofilm and algae in check.
Unique and Uncommon – A standout addition to any aquarium.

Natural Habitat:

The Amazon Whiptail Catfish is found in slow-moving, soft-water tributaries of the Amazon River. These waters are typically rich in tannins from decaying leaf litter and have a sandy or muddy substrate with an abundance of submerged driftwood and aquatic plants.

Aquascaping:

Plants: Thrives in aquariums with soft-leaved plants such as Anubias, Java Fern, and Amazon Sword.
Hardscape: Prefers driftwood and smooth rocks for perching and hiding.
Botanicals: Indian Almond Leaves and Alder Cones help create a tannin-rich environment that mimics their natural habitat.

Diet and Feeding:

The Amazon Whiptail Catfish is an herbivore and requires a diet high in plant matter. A well-rounded feeding routine includes:
✔ High-quality algae wafers and sinking vegetable-based pellets
✔ Fresh vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and blanched spinach
✔ Occasional protein-rich treats like bloodworms or daphnia (in moderation)

Providing a varied diet rich in fiber ensures their long-term health and helps maintain their natural grazing behavior.

Tank Mates and Compatibility:

This species is extremely peaceful and should be kept with similarly calm fish. Best suited for a community tank with other non-aggressive species, such as:
✔ Tetras (Rummynose, Cardinal, Ember)
✔ Rasboras and peaceful barbs
✔ Corydoras catfish
✔ Small, peaceful cichlids like Apistogramma and Bolivian Rams
✔ Other gentle bottom-dwellers like Otocinclus and small plecos

🚫 Avoid housing with aggressive or overly active fish, as the Amazon Whiptail Catfish is easily outcompeted for food.

Shrimp Safe?

Yes, this species is completely shrimp-safe and will not harm adult shrimp or their fry.

Breeding:

Breeding Amazon Whiptail Catfish in captivity is possible but requires a well-established tank with stable water parameters. Males tend to have broader heads and develop bristles along their snouts. They typically lay eggs on flat surfaces, and the male guards the eggs until they hatch. Fry require a diet of finely crushed plant-based foods and algae.

Recommended Tank Parameters:

Temperature: 74° - 82° F (23° - 28° C)
pH: 6.0 - 7.5
KH: 2 - 8 dKH
Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons (larger preferred for groups)

Care Guidelines:

Diet: Herbivorous; requires a steady supply of plant-based foods and algae.
Social Behavior: Extremely peaceful; best kept in small groups or with calm tank mates.
Origin: Tank-bred; not wild-caught.
Average Adult Size: 6 - 7 inches (15 - 18 cm).
Average Purchase Size: 3 - 4 inches (7.5 - 10 cm).

Shipping Schedule for this service

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
