African Water Fern is an extremely undemanding, yet very elegant plant that thrives in low-light setups!

The African Water Fern (Bolbitis heudelotii), also known as the Congo Fern or Bolbitis Narrow Leaf, is a popular but uncommon plant that is highly in demand for the freshwater aquarium. Its long, flowing, dark green leaves are very elegant and delicate in appearance. Unlike many plants, the African Water Fern attaches itself to and propagates on aquarium décor as an epiphyte.

African Water Fern is relatively rare because it is very slow growing. It only requires low to moderate lighting and nutrient rich soil, although its growth rate can be increased through CO2 injection/supplementation. It reproduces through rhizome division and the production of offshoots, and it thrives in areas with strong water currents. African Water Fern should not be planted with its rhizome (roots) buried in the substrate because it will rot and recede. Instead, it can be attached to rocks, driftwood, and other decorations in the aquarium, or it can be planted on top of the substrate as long as the roots are not completely buried.  Due to its delicate leaves, it should never be housed with large crayfish, medium to large cichlids, goldfish, or any other animals that are prone to picking at plants.

CO2 supplementation is beneficial, but not necessary for this plant. Like most plants, African Water Fern will benefit from supplementation such as Seachem Flourish, Flourish Excel, Nitrogen and other plant supplements.

No aquarium plant distributor/nursery/wholesaler/retailer can or will guarantee their plants to be 100% snail free. We can not guarantee our plants will be snail free.

UPS 1 Day: Monday through Thursday

Current Handling Time:

1-9 business days

Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.

Shipping Rate

Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
