The original Melanotaenia species are native to freshwater systems in New Guinea and surrounding regions, where they inhabit clear streams, slow-moving rivers, and vegetated shorelines.
These environments typically feature moderate flow, submerged roots, and dense plant growth along the edges, providing both cover and open swimming areas. While the Kali Tawa variety is maintained through selective breeding in captivity, it still reflects the natural behaviors and preferences of its wild counterparts.
• Plants: Use background plants such as Vallisneria, Water Sprite, or stem plants to create vertical structure while leaving open swimming space
• Hardscape: Incorporate driftwood and smooth stones to break sight lines and provide natural contrast
• Botanicals: Adding leaf litter such as Indian Almond Leaves or alder cones supports microfauna and encourages a more natural environment
A well-balanced setup with open midwater space and defined edges allows this species to display its full schooling behavior and color development.
Kali Tawa Rainbowfish are omnivores that benefit from a varied diet.
Feed a combination of high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp or daphnia. Regular protein-rich feedings help enhance coloration and support healthy growth.
This species does well in peaceful community aquariums with fish of similar size and temperament.
Suitable tank mates include other rainbowfish, tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and peaceful bottom dwellers. Avoid housing with aggressive or significantly larger species that may outcompete or stress them.
While generally peaceful, Kali Tawa Rainbowfish may prey on small shrimp, especially shrimplets. Adult shrimp may coexist in heavily planted aquariums, but breeding colonies may experience losses.
Rainbowfish are egg scatterers that typically deposit eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops.
In a well-maintained aquarium, spawning behavior may occur naturally. Eggs hatch within several days, and fry can be raised on infusoria followed by finely powdered foods.

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
Shipping Rate
Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
