The Wapoga Red Laser Rainbowfish is one of the most visually striking rainbowfish available, known for its glowing red-orange lateral stripe that cuts across a metallic blue to silver body like a beam of light. Originating from the Wapoga River system in Indonesia, this species brings both movement and brilliance to the aquarium when kept in an active group.
We are proud to offer this fish in both Tank Bred and USA Bred variants, giving hobbyists access to a well-acclimated, hardy population that thrives in a wide range of freshwater setups.

The original Wapoga Red Laser Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia sp.) was first documented in the Wapoga River drainage in Indonesia. These waterways are typically clear to slightly tannin-stained, with moderate flow, dense vegetation, and a mix of open swimming areas and submerged structure.
This variety is now widely available through captive breeding, allowing for improved adaptability to aquarium life while maintaining its vibrant natural coloration.
This is a fish that rewards movement, contrast, and intention. The goal is not to fill the tank, but to shape the space they move through.
• Plants: Use background plants as a frame rather than a wall. Species like Vallisneria, Water Sprite, or Limnophila can create height and motion along the back and corners. Floating plants such as Frogbit or Water Lettuce can be used sparingly to diffuse light without closing in the surface. Keep the center open so the fish have uninterrupted space to move.
• Hardscape: Build structure along the edges using Malaysian driftwood, spider wood, or smooth stones like river rock or Seiryu stone. These elements should guide the eye and create depth without interrupting the main swimming lane.
• Botanicals: Keep botanicals minimal. A few Indian Almond Leaves or alder cones can soften the environment slightly, but too much will reduce clarity and take away from the sharp contrast of their coloration.
This aquarium works best when the center feels like open water. The contrast between structure and space is what allows the group to move as one, and when they turn together, that red line flashes through the tank like a brushstroke across the canvas.
Wapoga Red Laser Rainbowfish are active omnivores that benefit from a varied diet.
Feed a combination of high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia. Regular protein-rich feeding enhances coloration, especially in males.
Consistency and variety are key to maintaining health and bringing out the strongest red tones.
This species is peaceful and does well in a wide range of community aquariums.
Ideal tank mates include other rainbowfish, tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, and bottom dwellers such as Corydoras and loaches.
Avoid aggressive species or slow-moving fish that may be stressed by their activity level.
Generally safe with larger shrimp. Very small shrimp or shrimplets may be preyed upon.
Providing dense cover will help improve shrimp survival.
Egg scatterers. Females deposit eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops.
Eggs typically hatch within 7–10 days. Fry require very small foods such as infusoria before transitioning to larger foods.
What makes the “Red Laser” pattern unique
The horizontal red stripe appears to glow under proper lighting and intensifies with maturity.
Do males and females differ in appearance
Yes. Males are more colorful with extended finnage, while females are more subdued.
How many should I keep together
At least six. Larger groups promote better coloration and behavior.
Are they aggressive
No. They are peaceful but very active.
Can they live in planted aquariums
Yes, as long as open swimming space is maintained.
Do they require strong filtration
Moderate flow and consistent water quality are ideal.
Will they jump
Yes. A secure lid is recommended.
What is the difference between Tank Bred and USA Bred
Both are captive-bred. USA Bred fish are bred domestically, while Tank Bred may include both domestic and imported captive-bred sources.
How do I enhance their coloration
Provide a varied diet, stable water conditions, and keep them in groups.
Are they beginner friendly

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
Shipping Rate
Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
